Sincere sympathy to Ann, Martin, Sean, Brian and extended families on John's passing.
I first encountered 'Mr O'Grady', as a newly enrolled student, at CBS Thurles in September 1971 and soon came to appreciate the breadth of his learning and pleasant teaching style. We subsequently worked alongside each other on the school's teaching staff and I always found him to be a stimulating and engaging colleague with a particular love for language. Indeed, my abiding memory of John from those years was seeing him engrossed in the staffroom dictionary as he explored the origin of some obscure word or phrase.
May he rest in peace.

Sincere sympathies to all the O'Grady family. Very sorry to hear of Johns passing. Johno as we called him back in the day was a great teacher, fair and one you could depend on. He made a difference, what more could you wish for. May he rest in peace.
Sincere condolences to the O’Grady family on John passing. I always enjoyed his English class, loved his wit & humour. His Culbáire columns were top class. May he rest in peace.
In 1958 corporal punishment was, sadly, still practised in Thurles CBS. Not so by "John O". His classes were anticipated. You knew he would regularly depart from the standard curriculum. He could, seamlessly, drift from English to intersting snippets of Irish History. He was the first teacher to enable me to begin to understand that poetry existed for more than just reciting lines. He never had to raise his voice and enjoyed being with us in class as well as on the hurling field. Many have, correctly, praised his great sporting and writing skills and achievements. I, simply, fondly remember him, nearly seventy years later, as the wonderful man who taught me to appreciate and learn to love English as a language. Thurles, Moycarkey and Tipperary were blessed to have you as a son.
Sincere sympathy to the O'Grady family on the sad passing of John. A sportsman, a teacher and a writer but above all a gentleman. May he rest in peace.
John was by far the best hurling writer of his time- analytical, always fair but forceful where appropriate. Always courteous in replying to correspondence . I'm old enough to have seen him in goal for Moycarkey-Borris and for Tipperary- a top-class performer, consistently excellent until sight issues forced his retirement. Suaimhneas siorai da anam.

Not easy. Trust in God and lean not on your own understanding.
My late mother Nancy and John were cousins.
John researched his family in great detail. He was very knowledgeable on the O 'Grady families from Graigue, Cloughmartin, Dukesland and Killenaule. John very kindly gave me copies of all his papers and was very courteous and helpful with queries and questions that followed.
Rest In Peace John. Your work is done.
