It is with great sadness that I have only just heard the news of Johns passing. Sincere condolences to Meg , Tom and all of Johns family. Sorry to have missed his funeral. I will miss our annual catch up at Christmas and his many great stories. Rest easy John
Deepest Sympathy to Meg & Tom and to all who grieve John’s passing. John always welcomed us to Manor House and entertained us with his stories from earlier years when he had his farm in Carrignafoy. May you rest in Eternal peace John.
Dearest Meg and family. Please accept my condolences on the passing of your father. May he rest in heavenly peace reunited with your lovely mother.RIP. x
This is hard to write as it means admitting that dear John has passed on. May he rest in perfect peace, reunited with his kind wife, Margaret.
John was an almost lifelong friend of my mum, having stayed at my grandparents guest house in Cobh as a child, with his dad, in times before he lived in the manor house. John must have known 4 generations of our family, through cattle purchases from the farm in Co. Waterford to showing my boys around Cobh, which they will always remember fondly.
On any visit (not frequent enough) we would call at John's shop or house to say hello. John was always so welcoming, a mine of information and a charming guide. We were lucky enough to meet Margaret and eventually Meg and Tom.
My dad worked in Aberdeen harbour (Scotland) and recommended John's business to any ships captain he met who would be visiting Cobh.
John was a rock and anchor for me when my parents passed, for which I will always be grateful. He will be sadly missed but remembered fondly in our family's prayers. A dear person.
Deepest condolences to Tom, Meg, Margaret and all John's family.
Our deepest condolences to John's family on this sad occasion. With a gruff exterior John was everybody's friend. A renowned storyteller and lover of local history and folklore.

Suaimhneas sioraí John.
Our sincere condolences to Meg, Tom and all the family on the passing of a wonderful gentleman.
May John rest in peace
Very saddened to hear of Johns passing. Meg, Tom and extended family you are in prayers and thoughts at this difficult time. Sorry we were not there in person for his send off. Great memories of John and Margaret including our annual trips to Cobh… It’s the 1980s, summers here, lambs are ready, Mary readies the good room, Hanlon is coming. On arrival, John sizes up the offering, places his hands on some to grade, offers £43. Paddy is offended. John threathens home. They agree to £45, James and I who own a lamb each are delighted. Mary bids them in for supper. Mary creates a fine feast. John shares his stories in his unique and mesmerising way. A week later, George Berry brings his red open back Ford transit Mk1 van to Kilphilibeen. We load the lambs. We make an assessment of whether or not we would make it up Spy Hill in Cobh (we always do!). Lambs dropped, Margaret prepares another feast. No thanks, Margaret I won't try the Ox tongue or pigs ear... More stories from John. Great hosts. We stop in Leahys Ballynoe and Paddy has a Babycham. We look forward to the trip again next year. Aside from my brother James and I, John was the last of the people that made these experiences of our formative years so memorable. Thanks John and rest in peace.
Sincere sympathies to Tom, Meg, his sister Margaret and the extended family on the death of John. May he rest in eternal peace.

John O'Hanlon was an institution in the town of Cobh .
He was a lovely human being and people who had the privilege of knowing him were deeply touched by his humanity. He was a wise and sagacious man.I remember how John had the gift of transmitting the common touch in all
of his interactions.
It would be true to say that when they made John, they threw away the mould. To John's family ,I wish I had the right words to comfort you.I certainly will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers during this most difficult period.

Sincere condolences to Meg,Tom and all the family. Thinking of you all. Have fond memories of John visiting us when he visited Listowel and loved our visit to Cobh
My uncle John was like some mythical creature. He’d fling my brothers and me so high into the air that we could almost touch the vaulted ceiling in the kitchen in the Manor House. He’d eat an entire carton of ice cream in a sitting. He’d pull out his teeth and chase us with them. Cobh was Oz, Narnia and Neverland rolled into one; a magical land and John was our guide. We’d help out on the farm with the sheep and cattle. In the butcher shop we were set to work scrubbing the block and sweeping floors. We’d accompany him across the country in his panel van, gathering provisions for the ships that came into Cork. He brought us up gangways and aboard ships from all around the world, where we met captains, stewards and merchant sailors. When we were teens, he’d entertain us with tremendous stories of things he’d seen, done or heard. He loved a good joke and he’d tell them over and over again to whomever he came across. For John loved to talk. I’m sure I met half of Cobh when John was in the shop. John was not shy, short of opinions or quiet. Often, you’d hear John’s roar, invectives never before imagined flying across the ether. Cobh is surely a quieter place in his absence. I join my cousins Tom and Meg in mourning his passing and celebrating his life. If John were a character in a novel, an editor might say that he was too unbelievable. But John O’Hanlon could never be tempered. Cobh has lost one of her true, unvarnished characters and we are all the poorer for it.
Deepest sympathy to Meg, Tom and family on the loss of your Dad. May he rest in peace.
