In the 50s and 60s my most cherished and fondest memories are those spent at Johnny's home at the end of the Berrinaugh Lane.Going there was ñike going to Tir-na-Nog,the open heartfire,homemade bread,his father Charlie on the fiddle ,Johnny chuckling or giving wisecracks.They lent me Westerns to read.Charlie helped my father making ricks of barley and hay.Johnny came too and drove the old ferguson and pitched.Head the barley says Charlie.Come in for a cup of tee,says Pee,was a saying of his at the time.
He was 7/8 years older than me but came with us to dances and to Arva.He won a song contest in St.Patrick's Hall Arva singing Geisha Girl.I wrote his name on several voting tickets that night.He won by a landslide and we felt famous.He looked like Elvis
Later he worked in Killeshandra,got a car ,then a better job in Navan and married.
By this time I was a teacher but often called to see him for a guinness and chat in John Smith's on way to or from Dublin.
He was humble,thoughtful, considerate
and empathetic.He never forgot Berrinaugh and his periodical visits with well-measured comments were looked forward to.He will be sadly missed by the Berrinaughs and others.
He made childhood in the Lane under the shadow of Crott Hill seem a happy time in spite of much adversity.
