Your welcome face in Talbot Street made all the difference when coming to work, so sorry and shocked to hear of your passing. John will be hugely missed from the door of Independent House. He knew everything that moved in the building and everyone. With his dry wit and cheeky grin, he could lift your mood in an instant on a tough day. I'm not sure he ever actually said 'hello' to me. Instead he would always lead with 'well, what's Leo up to now?' or laughing 'well, are we going to have an election, you'd love an election'.

I was in Los Angeles when I heard the terrible news and was worried i would miss his funeral.
It’s an honour to be at his last farewell - he was first port of call into the office and always a cheery hello or goodbye and a bit of a chat, especially about sun holidays, with the odd pint in Molloy’s.
Always a gentleman, he was much loved and will be sorely missed by all.

A true gentleman, John made coming into work an absolute pleasure. From looking after me when my own Dad was sick, and making sure I had an armful of newspapers to bring to the hospital, to discussing the quality (and noise) from the gigs at Kilmainham, Independent House won't be the same. Night night John.

Always enjoyed our chats on a Saturday. A welcoming face, a cheeky smile, witty and personable too. You’ll be missed. Condolences to the Phelan family. RIP, John

I was so sorry to hear about johns death. At times he seemed like the only sane man in talbot street. He had a quick wit and an answer to everything. Always up for a bit of banter. Liked to pretend to be cranky but then he’d break out the dazzling smile. And of course he knew everything that was going on because everyone told John everything. I will always remember the first time I met you John. I walked into the Indo credit union offices in Abbey Street. You gave me a warm cheeky smile as you directed me up the stairs. Fast forward a few years and the Sunday World arrived in Talbot Street from Terenure. I was delighted to see your friendly face in reception. We had some great laughs, chats and beers over the years.
