To Ailis, Alice and all the Power family, we are so sorry for the loss of John, a wonderful father and grandfather, such a sad time for all of you. He was such a lovely man, funny and insightful and great company. I remember meeting him so often in Clare and it was always such a pleasure to spend even a little time in his company
Ailís, condolences to you and all the Power family at this time. It's a very lonely time, I'm sure.
Tá súil agam go bhfanfaidh na cuimhní deasa atá agaibh do bhur athair, John, libh go gceann i bhfad.

Dear Ailís, please accept my heartfelt sympathies on your dear father’s passing. May he rest in eternal peace.
Dear Ailís and family. We were so sorry to hear of John's recent death. He was a lovely warm kind and funny man. Going back to our days on the South Circular we'd often meet himself and Ann out walking in the evening - they always had time for a chat. Suaimhneas Sioraí do. Beannachtaí and grá Mór. Eithne John agus an chlann uilig.
In the early 1990s one dark January afternoon just after New Year when it was cold foggy and bleak my Russian wife and three small children were flying from Moscow to Heathrow. (Without me...I was in London.)
Heathrow was too foggy and the Aeroflot plane was diverted to Shannon.
The passengers were taken off the plane and into the terminal and told to wait there until the weather improved.
It was miserable. My wife phoned me to explain the situation. It seemed a bit sad... And I was surprised that the airline didn't have to provide accomodation. But they insisted they were not responsible. I phoned Ailis in Dublin and told her. She phoned John her father who was at work - (I believe in the control tower )at Shannon. He said "shocking!"or something like that. He came down out of the tower , said Hi to my wife and kids , went to see Aeroflot, explained who he was and asked Aeroflot to not be leaving babies, small children and women etc all over the terminal indefinitely... Would they not get a hotel organised?
They did. Pronto.
My children had a very cosy night in Shannon. And about 150 other travellers also.
