I knew John as a next-door neighbour and playmate in Clare Street when we were children. In the late 1990s I had the great pleasure of being his lecturer in TCD. He was a very accomplished graduate student and an all rounder in academic terms.
Some years ago, John wrote to me to return my uncle's Africa campaign medal from WWII which had been among his dad's possessions. In his letter he expressed his strongly-held view that the medal should "go home".
Always a pleasure pleasure to meet, John a man of learning and integrity, and of great personal kindness. The world is a poorer place for his leaving it. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

I am so sorry to hear that John has passed away. I was a friend of his in NIHE and for a couple of years afterwards before I left Limerick. Although many years have passed since I had contact with John I retain fond memories of a quiet, dignified and loyal person. His parents were lovely people who were devoted to John. Sincere condolences to his family, friends and neighbours.
