What great and wonderful memories I have of Johnny Ryan. A legendary footballer long before I got to know him in athletics, Johnny was a teak-tough trainer with enthusiasm that was so infectious. Marlfield lawn and the wooded hills overlooking town were his natural playing habitat and the tougher the going the better he liked it. He really was a wonderful, big-hearted man who loved meeting people with his instant smile and gentle disposition. Farewell Johnny, it was a privilege to know you. Rest in peace.
