What to say? I've been thinking about John and you all since I heard the news last week, late. What a great spirit and presence John was, always interesting and open to listen. I'm so sorry for your loss, which just doesn't say enough really. Thinking of you all and sending warmest wishes.

It is very many years since I last saw John, possibly at the house on Clonkeen Road, but I have fond memories of the times my late husband, Derek, and I spent with him and Christine.

I first met John with Christine at a blues session in Slatterys of Capel Street in 1968. We became friends because of our common musical tastes. Later on, in the early 1970s, I discovered that John was working with my then girlfriend, now wife, Laura, at CPC. One day I met John in St Stephens Green and he told me that that he was giving up his job and moving to Cape Clear Island. I thought " that will never last". The next time I saw John and Christine was on Cape Clear Island in June 2005 when I arrived with my wife and family, which included my 95 year old mother in-law and my 8 year old grandson. John and Christine could have not been more kind and were the same as they had always been, interested in everything and everyone around them and kind to a fault. I am sure that, as someone has said, John has moved on to his next big project.

R.I.P John a neighbour of over 3yrs. A wonderful man a charming character with so many tales to tell. Many hours spent listening to him. A fountain of knowledge and so soft spoken. He had a good word for all and loved the animals particularly the cats. The world is now at a loss for his passing. May God Bless the family in their grief.

I am so sorry to hear this news. I first met John and Christine as a teenager at Irish college in Cape Clear close to 40 years ago and thought that they were the coolest people ever! They very kindly welcomed me back many times after that and I enjoyed great chats with John over the years. He was always very encouraging and warm to me. There wasn’t a single subject you couldn’t chat with him about. Rest in peace John. Love to Christine, Martha and Kate. X

His gentle kindness and presence has had a great impact on my 11 year old self, talking about cameras in the bialann, waving off the students after coláiste, and beyond. I am so sorry for your loss, Christine, Martha and Kate, and your families. John was one of a kind. He beguiled me with his wit and literary references when I was teenager in Cape Clear. Together with Christine, he gently encouraged me, sensing I was barely managing my young-adult duties in the Coláiste.
His warmth to me (and yours) always stayed with me.
