To all of John's family and friends, may I extend my deepest sympathies. I knew John through our work together in various graveyards in Co. Limerick and found him a wonderfully caring man, gentle and kind and very passionate about his local heritage.

We were delighted to have him take our sunday morning sevice in Croom Church. We miss him but each year when his daffodils bloom in our church yard we remember him. Rest in peace , John.

I fondly recall many conversations with John about everything from daffodils to drama at the top of the hill. John was a friendly neighbour. He was well-read and had a keen interest in local history and German. He will be missed. May he rest in peace.

P.S. In 2020, I penned a poem to him about his daffodils:

John Scanlan's Daffodils

A field of yellow, flanked by hills,
Known locally as John Scanlan's daffodils.
This year they are left totally unplucked,
Remaining only for time to destruct.

The Coronavirus has everything cancelled.
Even Daffodil Day plans have been shovelled.
This terrible disease has many riddled.
Life, as we know it, is seriously muddled.

But with their sextet of petals and trumpeted faces,
John Scanlan's daffodils will be in next year's vases.

So sorry to see that John has passed away .he used pop into my shop in foynes to cut his hair when i was there .he was always a very pleasant gentleman .Rest in peace John .Sympathy to all his family

He was a fantastic artist and his worked was displayed for everyone to see in his room. Our deepest sympathy to the Scanlan family on John's death. He contributed greatly to St Nicholas in a very dignified manner while he had the health to do so. He loved in particular to see concerts in the church & was great to round up an audience. We have missed him. He is now free from pain.
