I spent a year in the early 90’s with John in the former Yugoslavia - he was so sincere, a man who had such dry wit, and so loyal to his fellow Gardai.
He had a great rapport with the locals, and was held in high esteem by them - everyone loved him!
A man with great common sense until we reached the Italian border with an ‘unauthorised’ package which shall be remained nameless. But that’s another story!!
