My condolences to Val and John's family.
John was a very learned man and a man of integrity. He was a great asset to the Green Party, in many ways, including defining rules and procedures.
He made a great contribution with his knowledge, intellect and wit, and was quiet, and always soft-spoken and level-headed.
He consistently showed his experience and good judgement, and provided good advice when sought.
He is missed, personally and professionally.

I wish to extend my deepest sympathy especially to Val and members of John's family - I started work in Official Publications in Trinity Library in 1978 and respected the great dedication John had for building this collection over the years which has stood the testimony of time. It is with great sadness that we learned, only last night, of the passing of our dear friend and colleague, John Goodwillie, MGSI.
John was a long-time member of the Society and a very accomplished genealogist and local historian. He also had a great interest in heraldry and vexillology and was always on hand to advise on a range of matters appertaining to flags, emblems, coats-of-arms and the protocols applying to their use.
In February last year, he delivered a very well researched talk on the Stoney family and its available on https://youtu.be/_hJ_BNMjJ3g?si=hH2vHE0zU0_8I7X5 His passion for the subject and his attention to detail was always inspiring and indeed, instructional to others embarking on their family history journey of discovery.
Our sincerest condolences to Val and to John's family and friends. RIP

My deepest sympathies to Val and to John's brother and sister. In our activities together in the Socialist Workers Movement, Socialist Labour Party and Gralton magazine John was a steady presence with a keen analytical mind and grasp of detail. He combined his personal and political interests with his professional skills to produce a genealogy of the Irish socialist left and a bibliography of smaller marxist organisations. He had a life-long commitment to the possibility of a better world.

John was an incredible activist — one of the strongest, leading by example. Quiet and steady, clear and focused. I had the privilege of serving with him on the National Lesbian and Gay Federation (NLGF) committee in the early to mid-1990s. I was deeply struck by his character and learned from his example.
His contributions to the advancement of the LGBT community will endure. His work will live on for generations to come.
Thank you, John.

John will be well remembered in Trinity Library as a colleague with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Official Publications of Ireland and the EU. Managing the flood of materials that flowed into the Library each week, he sorted, catalogued and arranged them in order. He could put his hand on any document sought by a reader and offer related material that would otherwise be missed. In the pre-internet days, he provided an invaluable service to Irish government departments, businesses and researchers.
As a supportive colleague, he was always well informed on world affairs and was always willing to share his knowledge with others.
Sincere condolences to his family.

Dear Val, Thinking of you on this sad occasion with fondest regards. I’ve such terrific memories our our time spent together at the Hirschfeld Centre and also recall John’s oversight of GCN in its early days.
John also had an unswerving interest in advancing an Irish LGBTQ archive, in essence the precursor to the Irish Queer Archive, for which I’ll always be grateful.
My condolences to John’s siblings and extended family.

I have fond memories of John when he and I were members of a small Bray-based left wing group, along with the redoutable Peg Popplewell and others, and we were also together in the short-lived Socialist Labour party. John was always a rock of calmness and common sense and a great comrade in all those days. RIP.
