John was an absolute gentlemen, a family man- with a big heart and wicked sense of humour. He was loyal and supportive- when I decided to move to Belfast with GE, John made it happen. I’ll never forget that.
I didn’t know he was into war gaming until the time he made me traipse for miles in a snowy, windy, freezing cold Chicago with him to buy a model figure. Tiny thing it was. I thought he was joking at first- that couldn’t be it surely? He wasn’t, and it was!
John was a dear friend and I will truly miss him. RIP John.

Dear Jean and family, we were both so shocked and saddened to hear of the untimely death of John. We spent the first 3 months of our married life with John in Erlangen and we have only very happy memories of our time with John in 1987. We also shared your wedding day with you. He was an incredible man, starting as apprentice with the ESB and after much focus and determination becoming a PhD lecturer in UCD, John was very smart and had a fantastic work ethic. We are away at present so could not attend the funeral but John’s passing has deeply touched both of us. Jean you are in our thoughts.

I've made many good friends on my wargaming travels, but John was one of the best, both as player and as a person. He was a great guy, and he will be missed by everyone in the gaming community.

My sincere condolences to Jean, Rachel and Luke.
I was fortunate enough to meet John a few years ago through work. He was an incredibly likeable and professional man from the moment we met which made every interaction enjoyable. I saw John interact with his students and colleagues at UCD and it's not unrealistic to say there will probably be students who remember him standing on a desk explaining electrons. Jean and family lost a husband and dad, while the rest of us lost a beautiful human being.
