I was shocked and very saddened to hear of John's death. We first met as first year students in St. Pat's, Drumcondra in 1972. Nine of us, including John stayed for a year in 38 Upper Drumcondra Rd. in Mrs. Galligan's B&B. We shared many adventures here in 1972/1973 until we moved into Clonmacnoise on the college campus in September 1973.
John was a kind and generous man who would do anybody a good turn if he could. I remember particularly the swot-ins in John's room in Clon facing the final exams in 1974. His tutorials pulled a lot of us through. After St. Pat's I remember marvellous weekends in Elm Mount Ave. and Vernon Gardens.I recall a three week trek across Europe with John and Noel where we travelled overland to Istanbul. I remember John taking the bus down to Clare so he could accompany me on my first ever drive to Dublin.
At the end of the 1970s I moved back to Clare and John left teaching for awhile and our lives took different paths. The last time we met was at the 25th anniversary in 1999 and I feel sad about that. John was someone who had a positive influence in my life as a student and young teacher. He was one of life's good guys and even though we weren't in contact, that influence and memories have always stayed with me.
To his family, even though I don't know you (apart from Tom), please accept my sincere condolences Many of us, his friends from that time are grieving too.
May John rest in peace.
Happy memories of teaching with John in Kilbarrack Dublin in the 1970s. He was very proud of being from Mayo.
Sincere condolences to his family, may he rest in peace
Condolences to Deirdre Hazel Ciaran Sean and all of Johns family and extended family. So sorry to learn today of his passing. May he rest in peace.
We were so shocked and sad to hear of John's passing. My sincere condolenses to Deirdre, his sons and daughters, his brothers, Raymond and Thomas and sister Bernie. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers at this sad time. John spoke fondly of you all and of Mayo! We got to know John here in Athboy, he was great friends with my late husband, Eamon and my son James. He will be missed by all who knew him, he really was Superman.
Go n-deana Dia trócaire air agus beanneacht Dé le aimn John.
I'm so very sad to hear of Mr Walsh, my thoughts are with all of his family . He was a fantastic teacher , he definitely left me with great memories i can still remember some of the stories he told us in class. Great memories. Rest in peace 🙏
We were very saddened and shocked to hear last Wednesday of John's too early passing.
I also shared a house with John, Noel Lohan, Barry McGann and John's brother Thomas in the seventies in Clontarf. We had great fun times and we remember especially Christmas dinners we shared there. John was always the one who helped each of us out in various ways.
Like Noel, when we all went our separate ways from Clontarf, we lost contact with John in the eighties.

We would like to send our deepest sympathies to his wife Deirdre, his brothers, Thomas and Raymond, his sister Bernie, his daughter Hazel, his sons Ciarán and Seán, and to his wider family.
May his gentle soul rest in peace.
Deepest sympathy to Hazel and all the family on the passing of John. May he rest in peace.
Sorry to hear of John's passing. Unfortunately I lost contact with John and his brother Thomas after I left Dublin in 1979. We shared a house together in Vernon Ave. During our first years of teaching. He got me through the driving test and helped me buy a car. All the tributes are testament to the man he was. I remember when and why he started smoking. I always feared they would get him eventually. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this sad time. Ar dheis De go roimh a anam. Nollaig.

So sorry to hear of John’s passing. He taught my son in St. Ciarans and taught (tried his best to teach!) two of my children music. I also had dealings with John when he used the Community Centre for his youth band practice. He was a great all rounder and always generous with his advice and support when needed. My sincere condolences to Deidre and family; and also to Hazel, Ciaran and Sean. Having spent most of my teaching career working with John I'd just like to summarise how he influenced all of us( both pupils and staff) for the better. He was always very willing to lend a hand whenever needed. In school,we called him Mr Fix- it , as he could turn his skills to any problem. Thus I ' d like to add a chorus to the St Ciarans Anthem of 2008 in
his memory:

St Ciaran's we're all proud
Of John and all he's done. He Mentored staff and children
To lives of fame and fun.
He was diligent and firm
And he loved to tell a yarn
But that Nicotine would
eventually do him harm!

Farewell and Rest In Peace.
Conall Larkin.

He was a great friend during that time and we shared many moments of differing varieties some great and some borderline! He was wise before many of us back then and always full of wisdom. May he rest in peace.
As a former pupil, I can only speak so highly about John and what he did for my development even from such a young age.

He was the teacher that comes to mind from my childhood when I reference a teacher that made the extra effort and believed in people.

He was a great support in those early years with a great sense of humour. He contributed hugely to St Ciarán's on many levels over many years. He was a real gentleman and a true friend. Unfortunately we will not be able to attend his funeral as we are out of the country.
Suaimhneas síoraí dá anam uasal agus leaba i measc na Naoimh go raibh aige.
So sorry and gutted to hear of the passing of John Walsh. I had, like so many before and after me, on reflection, one of the most incredible life lessoners of his time (maybe we didnt feel that at the time sometimes 😂) but gift me and hundreds upon hundreds of others, with not just his tutledge, but also all the life nuggets, over the years.

As a young primary school pupil, he once commented on my school report that 'his tongue was hinged in the middle, so it could rattle at both ends' 😂😂

My mam still brings out the lines when it suits her! 🙂

He knew how to get the best out of everyone of his pupils.

We stayed in touch remarkably over the past 30 years since my time in St. Ciarans NS.

Others have listed his remarkably ecletic mix of talents that dont require reinforcement, but anyone who crossed paths with John, always had something positive to reflect on.

A one off, a true gent, a talented and amazing character who I still see 30 years later in some of my actions and attitude.

Sir, rest in peace and thank you for everything.

Mile buíochas agat mo chara as gach rud.

Suaimhneas síoraí Sir ❣️

May his gentle soul rest in Peace
