I have many happy memories of times at Braemar in our college years; John was a fabulous man, always in good humor and excellent company on our many visits to this most hospitable home.

My sadness on hearing of John’s passing was profound. Memories came flooding back of his year as Captain of the 3rd Team in Lansdowne. We knew we would be a sophisticated group with a captain from “The Green Machine”(Gonzaga). We knew we would win debates and arguments, but what about the rugby?? We shouldn’t have feared, he was an exceptional leader and we had a stellar year beating all before us. A player who was totally underrated, by himself, he led from the front and I can’t remember him ever having a poor game.
Off the field he was a hoot. The craic was mighty, he could be as good a messer as the best (very un-Gonzaga like). He was class, and he was the catalyst to one of my most enjoyable seasons of my life.
When we won the cup I told him we would have to send him to hospital to have that smile taken off his face.
What a great guy.
Years later he watched his son Paul lift the Schools Cup as captain for Gonzaga and that “winning smile” was back…….and another visit to the hospital to have that smile removed!!

Very happy memories of canvassing with John for his dad.

Spent a year in same year as John at school, played rugby with him, some player, we won pennant/league as juniors, then met him at Kevin street , and didnt see him for years later , both drinking Ballygowan and yet having a laugh, so proud of his family.
