It was with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of Johnny. Our paths first crossed many decades ago through the PTAA and later through GAA, history, local knowledge and social activity. Like many of our generation, Johnny was a man with little formal education, but learned more than most through the education of life. He read and treasured every moment of his life and he never shirked on sharing information with others equally interested. We are all privileged to have known him and our lives have been encouraged and are the better of his wonderful personality and friendship. Sincere sympathies to his family and friends. Rest in Peace Johnny.

Johnny bridged the gap between the old world and the new in the worlds of farming, folklore, history, poetry, literature, tradition and football. He was above all a learned man and a gentleman.

Johnny was a man of wide interests, and had a wonderful memory for the most arcane facts.

I was so very sorry to hear about Johnny's passing. A gentleman I got to know through his regular visits to the Museum down through the years. Such a fountain of knowledge and always so helpful if we were working on an exhibition he held an interest in. It was always such a pleasure to meet him. I offer my sincere condolences to the family of the late Johnny and I am saddened to learn of his passing. Though I only met Johnny once I felt I knew him so well through our many long and shared phone conversations. We had much in common through our shared love and passion for our local history and heritage. Johnny was a fountain of knowledge who shared this with me so willingly. Every time Johnny's name came up on my phone I just knew I was about to realise how much I didn't know but was about to find out. If I missed that call I felt I missed part of the day while if I answered it I likely missed the whole day! Mo chara, Ar dheis Dé go raibh d’anam dílis.

I was so sad to hear about Johnny's passing. Growing up on the boreen he was always a part of our lives going up and down the road and calling in to the house for a chat. When I grew up and became interested in history and books I found much to talk to him about. His knowledge of the local history of Kilconly was unparalleled. He had a great eye for books and knew how to pick out something interesting and unusual from a pile of otherwise worthless material. He was always willing to share his knowledge and for that I'm very thankful. I was very sorry he missed the Kilconly book launch last Saturday but along with some of his books being there, his spirit was there too. Sincere condolences to all of Johnny's family, his sisters and his nieces and nephews who looked after him so well.
