Deepest sympathies to the family & friends of Johnny. Such a lovely gentleman. We will miss him being around.
Jo & Niall, No.4.
Johnny was a much loved colleague during his time at the Irish Times. He was a careful and adept wordsmith. He was also visually gifted in newspaper layout and design. But, most of all, Johnny was a thoroughly decent and honorable man.
Deeply saddened to hear of Johnny's passing.

I've so many fond memories of him but in particular have always been grateful for the musical education he provided to me. Indeed my lifelong love of Pink Floyd is directly attributed to Johnny.
Catherine and the exstended Hughes family accept our condolences. Our families were neighbours for many years and we are saddened at Johnny's passing.
May his gentle soul rest in peace.
I worked with John in the Irish Independent when we were both young
He was strong-minded and clever then and remained so. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.
I have many happy memories of meeting Johnny in Mary and Aidan’s house in Rathfarnham. Condolences to his family.
Deepest sympathies to the Hughes family on the sad passing of Johnny .I played with Johnny for many years in Clontarf RFC.He was a very talented player and the “Mr Cool “ of the team.may he now rest in peace
I have very good memories of working with Johnny in the Irish Press (briefly) and the Irish Times. He was a very considerate colleague, very modest and unassuming, but someone whose humanity and good will were very evident. He never allowed the demands of a rather stressful job override the importance of good interpersonal relations. He will be much missed.
Deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to Johnny’s family on his death. One cool character who we all enjoyed in Clontarf Rugby Club. May he rest in peace.
So sorry to hear of the passing of Johnny. Deepest sympathy to all his family. Johnny was a wonderful friend to my late brother, John Dinan for many years .
My most sincere sympathy to all Johnny's family, friends and relatives. He was a fine colleague and we shared many opinions and views.
Sincere condolences to all who loved Johnny. May he rest in eternal peace.

I worked alongside Johnny in newspapers for over 20 years - he was the best of colleagues and the warmest of friends - staunch, loyal and thoughtful and always good company. Fondly remembered.
RIP Johnny. A lovely man and an excellent boss, restrained and thoughtful amid the hurly-burly of a daily newsroom.
Johnny, may your gentle soul rest in peace.
