My deepest condolences to Jackie and all of Johnny’s relatives on his tragic and untimely passing, when he still had so much more to give. It was my pleasure and privilege to work with Johnny on his Dislocation & Celebration series on second-generation Irish musicians and singers for The Irish Post and his effortlessly erudite book reviews for The Irish Times. He was also great company and great crack, whether in the Palace Bar in Fleet Street or walking the streets of Waterford where we last met. He leaves a wonderful legacy in both his peerless books and the lifelong love of his friends and family. May his memory be a blessing.
Deepest sympathies Jackie, Tara, Arron and the Quinlan family on the untimely death of Johnny, a gifted writer. He will be sadly missed in Tramore. Such fun we had in his company in Martha's over the years enjoying a few drinks. Ar dheis De go raibh a h-anam dilis
We were so sad to hear of Johnny’s passing. He was a lovely man, with a gift for language and a passion for music. I loved his book on The Smiths, Morrissey and Marr: The Severed Alliance. Captured not just that band’s history, but a whole history of Irish immigration to the UK. With lots of love to Jackie at this difficult time.
We'll miss you, Johnny - you were a good friend and true.
Johnny was a true original, and a great source of inspiration to me. I valued his advice and looked forward to those "five-minute" phone chats that you knew would last an hour or more! Hope to pick up where we left off, Byrdman. God bless JR.
My deepest condolences to all family, friends and colleagues mourning Johnny's untimely passing. Although I didn't know him personally, I had the great privilege of working on a book with Johnny a couple of years ago, albeit indirectly. Stumbling upon his incredible body of work as a young music fan was like finding the key to a veritable treasure chest, his writing inspiring me to pursue my own path in rock'n'pop publishing. Much love and peace from a lifelong fan of everything you did. x
I was so sad to hear the news about Johnny. We had known each other for over forty years since we first met at Newcastle University. He was a wonderful friend to have and I know he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. My thoughts are with Jackie and the family at this sad time.
Sincere condolences Jackie, Tara, Aaron and Johnny's family. May Johnny rest in peace.
I'd known Johnny since 1982 and immediately knew I'd found a kindred spirit. After a wonderful relationship which lasted almost 40 years, I am so sad to have to say goodbye. I will forever remember and admire you for your groundbreaking books and irrepressible personality. I'm honored to have been your good friend. I will remember you always. Jackie, our deepest sympathies are with you and to all those close to Johnny.
Sincere condolences to Jackie and all of Johnny's family,he was an extremely talented writer, may he rest in peace.
Well Johnny, it was an honour to have been you pal for so many years. You were a force in my life and I was so proud of you, your strength in the struggle that was your life journey. We both came a long way since those early days at St Vincent's primary. The day we spent with you and Jackie in London will remain very special to Pia and me. Love you pal, RIP.
Sincere condolences Jackie to yourself and the family. Johnny was one of a kind, and be sadly missed by all that knew him. I know my father especially would be very sad to hear of his passing. Perhaps they are now sharing a pint and quizzing each other in another place.
It is an honour to have been at the start of your writing career Johnny and to have typed the manuscript of the first edition of “Timeless Flight”. In those pre-internet days I still remember waiting impatiently for your next handwritten instalment to arrive by post and the telephone conversations we had about each chapter. I’m glad it was the beginning of some wonderful books that I know are cherished by a lot of people. I can’t believe we have lost you so early and that there will be no more words. Rest in peace Johnny. You will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.

Danny and I send our sympathies to Jackie and the rest of the family.
A sad loss - condolences to the family and his many, many friends. You leave a chocolate digestive sized hole in my heart. jx

I remember John with great fondness - he played an enormous part in my late teens.....enigmatic, energised and lovable and always with a mischievous twinkle in his eye.. I raised a glass of Guinness today to celebrate his life R.I. P John

Really sad about Johnny's sudden and untimely passing. Such a bright mind and a wonderful writer. So sorry you've lost your love Jackie. Our sympathy too to Tara and Arron and to Johnny's nephews and extended family. Rest in peace, Johnny.
I met Johnny when we were both in our teens and I remember, from the start, it was clear he marched to a distinctly different drum. But you couldn't ask for a better friend - he was consistently funny, thoughtful, bright, talented, unbelievable and intriguing. It's hard to believe we've shared our last pint, our last reminiscence and our last conversation. I hadn't realised quite how much I expected and counted on him to be around. Rest in peace Johnny.

John

Although I first met Johnny in the early 80's I only really got to know him in 1988/89 when he came to kip on our sofa in Manchester for the weekend and stayed for much of the following 6 months. The three of us had an absolute hoot!
I loved his company, he was a unique friend and I will miss him.

Deborah

We send our deepest condolences to Jackie and family, Johnny's nephews and wider family and all those who loved him and will miss him.

John and Deborah
Remembering all the times you called to see the Regans and the great times we had.
May you rest in peace.

Johnny will be sadly missed. Condolences and love to Jackie.
Johnny and I met on our first day as English Lit students at Newcastle University, shared a house together for two years, and had so many great and crazy times... I proof-read the first draft of Timeless Flight... Stayed in touch throughout the decades and have such lovely memories of nights out in London, talking and drinking into the early hours... Last saw him at my wedding 18 months ago... He never lost his amazing enthusiasm and zest for life, especially for the music he loved...An amazing, idiosyncratic, man who achieved so much. I will miss him greatly. My condolences to Jackie and to all his family. RIP

Jackie, my deepest condolences to you and all of the family.
I first met John in 1970 and have always been glad to have known him over the many years since then; they now seem too few.
I was always pleased and proud to call him my friend and I shall miss him immensely.
Farewell Johnny. We will miss those impromptu visits at odd hours that invariably ended with a few bottles of red, old 45s playing and conversation flowing. It could be Morrissey or Van we discussed but more likely old Pimlico pubs and characters, football and the going rate for an ex council flat in Churchill Gardens Vs Page Street! I never spent a dull moment in your company and you will always be remembered fondly. You truly were the Bard of Pimlico and we will have 'The Crack' again.Love to Jackie always xx
My condolences to Jackie and to John’s family. He will be sorely missed - as superlative company, as a fount of memories about Pimlico in the 70’s, as a chess player against whom I would rarely win a game, as an adviser on pop and rock music, as a lively contender in any debate, and as a friend for fifty years.
Johnny Rogan RIP
A self taught man, came from humble beginnings, achieved great works as an author. Many fond memories of Pimlico as a life long friend, Johnny will be sadly missed.

John Regan and family
John brought his friendship and good humour to me as a life long friend. He was a great observer and raconteur, never lost for an incisive account and recollection of events.
He had the ability to turn up and continue where we left off.
A true and much appreciated friend.
My sympathy to Jackie and all the family.
God Bless You John.
Marian Stoddart
John was a very dear and lifelong friend. I knew him and his family from their early times as I was a neighbour in Lupus Street, Pimlico. John kept in touch over the years, bringing his many stories,
as well as a listening ear. He will always be remembered with great fondness.
My sympathy to Jackie and family. With sadness. God Bless you John. Maureen Regan
After knowing him for 40 years, it's tough to say farewell to a friend, mentor and debating opponent like Johnny - a great writer, talker and thinker, and an endlessly engaging companion. I'll always hear his voice in my ear with every word I write, challenging me to do my best. Much love to Jackie and all those who loved him, from Peter & Rachel
Thanks Johnny for the friendship, conversation and memories over the last fifty years. Will miss you very much! Deepest sympathy to Jackie and family.
Jackie, David and Michael: my deepest condolence for your loss. Johnny was, in his unique way, convivial, amusingly quirky and intriguing; a close and valued friend since 1970, who augmented the quality of our lives, that are now diminished without him

Like all those that had the good fortune to share some of their lives with JR we are really struggling to make sense of and come to terms with his passing. Who could possibly have foreseen the extraordinary life that he managed to carve for himself from such humble beginnings. We send huge love to Jackie at this sad time and hope that she will, in time, be able to recover from her terrible loss.
John, thank you for your friendship, inspiration and insight over the decades. There will never be another like you. Sincere sympathy to Jackie for her untimely loss.
With thanks for being a loyal & inspiring friend for over half a century. So many discussions, songs & beers to recall, with the occasional frustration thrown in for good measure! I will miss you greatly.
And with deepest sympathies to Jackie for her shocking & untimely loss.

My deepest sympathies to Jackie. Johnny was someone I admired greatly from afar for many years and who later became a friend. I always enjoyed our email correspondence and chats about the Byrds and Gene Clark. Johnny was great company and a peerless researcher, scholar and writer. Rest in peace.
My deepest sympathy Jackie to you and your family on the sad death of Johnny. May he rest in peace.
I’m so sad Johnny is gone - too soon. I knew him primarily through my husband Chris Charlesworth, his editor at Omnibus Press, and spent time with him at many events. He was funny, sharp and possesed great character. As a designer, it was my pleasure to work with him on his Byrds Requiem for the Timeless book covers (the largest spines I’ve ever tackled). Chris and I will cherish fond memories of him and he’ll be sorely missed.
But mongst them all was none more courteous Knight,
Then Calidore, beloued ouer all,
In whom it seemes, that gentlenesse of spright
And manners mylde were planted naturall.

Peace and Light

Remembering our 'Gate' school days together, rushing to get the NME every week and discussions over the relative merits of the Byrds and the Kinks, Also the arguments over football and many hours spent together around the streets of Victoria - a friendship that endured over the years. The 'Pimlico Boys' will miss your company at our get-togethers but you will always be remembered, with many stories to be told and re-told over a few pints!
