Our sincere sympathy to Joe and the extended Ward family on the death of Johnny. Unfortunately we were unable to attend the funeral. Johnny Ward was a legend to generations of NUI Galway students. I have come across many alumni over the years who have very fond memories of visits to Wards Shop and lots of friendly banter with Johnny. For many students over very many years he was a very highly regarded and beloved member of the NUI Galway extended community. May he rest in peace.

I am privileged to call Johhny my uncle as he was a gentleman. I remember as a child landing in University Rd with my siblings & running into the shop, & no matter how busy it was you were allowed to pick a treat, was like a scene from Charlie & the chocolate factory, such joy!
In later years, I was delighted to have worked there over a few summers, & loved it.
Johnny had always time for the customer & a man of great knowledge. He was kind, generous & very witty.
Heartfelt sympathy to my cousins, Joe, Mike & Marion, I know you will miss him terribly. Maureen will be waiting with open arms, & they will be united again.

During my childhood holidays in Galway it was an absolute treat to visit Ward's shop with my late mother Annie Monaghan. Johnny was always present and very generous to us! I know that he was a renowned gentleman; popular with UCG students and with all of his other customers. I have great memories too of Maureen who was a lady in every sense of that word. I have so many happy memories of Johnny, he was a central figure in our childhood, always welcoming, kind and generous in his manner. Childhood visits to Wards always came with possibility as we stocked up for lunch or a boat trip. Later as a student and then a parent Johnny was an important constant friendly presence. No matter how busy he was, he always made time for us. Sincere condolences to the whole family.

To Joe, Mike Marion, Johnny's sister Queenie, Eilis and Kerry and all Johnny's grandchildren and family. We are all very sorry to hear of the passing of Johnny- who was a tremendous neighbour to our extended family here. Johnny, a gentleman; was a great man for a conversation and provided a great service for all here and in the college. We fondly remember Maureen too, who Johnny is reunited with.
