Dearest Downes family, I’m so sorry you’ve lost the rock and head of your family. Joseph was everything you’d expect from a gentleman he was kind, generous and a great father. The humour runs through you all like a gentle wave, for such a distinguished man, there was such great laughter from the stories I heard. My sincere condolences to Daire, Kate, Leonie, Joseph, Vincent and Sarah. One of the highlights throughout my childhood in the 60s and 70s was spending time with my cousins, the Downes. The Downes family home oozed love, harmony and laughter. I loved being with them. Joseph Downes was a wonderful man, always made me feel welcome and included. I remember the evening meals in their home were always an event, filled with mischief, laughter and fun, generally led by Joseph. May he rest in peace. I have no doubt that he will.

Many times I heard, his distinct voice over the wall as he examined Leonie's garden and giving tips when needed. His memory will live on as the family members have all become experts in this field.
