My commiserations to you and your family. I live in Canada and heard of Joe’s death through Paul Martin and John Crown and have now read all the eloquent condolences on this website.

I have wonderful memories of Joe from my surgical internship with him and Professor O’Malley in the Mater in 1982. He was a great clinician and teacher but mostly I recall his witty, joyful, extrovert personality and his great generosity. He lit up all around him with his humour and laughter and his love of life and of being a doctor, and of course a surgeon. He frequently talked of his training in Canada and was one of the reasons I went there for my training and have never left almost 40 years later!

A special memory was that he invited me to a dinner in his apartment in Dun Laoghaire and who was there but Chris De Burgh – before the ‘Lady in Red’ but already famous – I was impressed! But most of all I will remember Joe for his kindness and his mentorship and interest in a mere medical intern. Although it is decades since I last saw him, news of his passing made me sad but also brought back so many wonderful memories and it made me happy to read and hear that he and you have 2 wonderful daughters and lots of grandchildren.

Again, my commiserations on his passing.

I’m so saddened to hear of Joe’s passing. I sang alongside him in the alto section of the Music Room choir, where his sense of humour was truly unmatched. Joe could turn even the dodgiest note into a good laugh, and rehearsals were always brighter with him around. He’ll be sorely missed. My heartfelt condolences to all his family.
Sincerest sympathies to Eilis and all of Joe's family on his sad passing. May he rest in peace. I have very fond memories of Joe in our music room choir and all of our little concerts and performances. He was always smiling and joking, and he sang and played piano with such ease and enjoyment. He was an inspiration. We were delighted to see him dial in to our virtual practice late last year and he'll be sadly missed. Thinking of you all at this difficult time.
My deepest condolences on the passing on the wonderful Mr Duignan. The highlight of my medical training in UCD were the highly entertaining - and highly educational - tutorials from this wonderful man who would tell patients ‘I’m just a lowly surgeon’. One poor post op patient almost ruptured his sutures laughing so much at the great repartee Joe elicited! He will remain an inspiration to me in my career. He was tremendously kind, witty and encouraging. It was a joy to work with Sophie in Crumlin a few years ago. Thinking of the whole family.
To Eilis & family,
I was saddened to hear of Joe's passing. He brought many laughs and a sense of fun, as well as his deep singing voice, to our little choir. May he rest in peace. Ruth.
