I was saddened to hear the news about Joe. He was our lecturer in Commerce in Galway many years ago. He was very well liked and respected by the class. He was also a colleague in Galway. We had many chats in the old coffee room there, and he had great stories about his travels. Joe was always pleasant and smiling, and a joy to meet.

Life is a journey measured not just in years, but in the lives we quietly touch along the way.
At different stages, we meet people who guide us, shape us, and gently point us in the right direction. Sometimes they move on from our daily lives, but their words, their care, and their example remain with us forever.
Joe was one of those rare individuals.
His wisdom, warmth, and understated humour left a lasting imprint on so many of us at Shannon College. He helped build foundations that continue to support generations long after the lectures ended.
May he rest in peace, reunited with eternal light, and may his family find comfort in knowing how deeply respected and appreciated he was.

I have very fond memories of Joe. He taught me many years ago when I first came to Galway. In later years he was a very good colleague, our offices were beside each other and we both had a habit of working late in the evening. So many's the time I listened to Joe's stories about his travels and life as a youth in Limerick and whatever other mischief he got up to. Always a smile on his face. Such a lovely man. To Joe's family, may his beautiful spirit sustain you through these sad times.

My heartfelt sympathy at the sad loss of your father and husband Joe. I will Joe always remember as a gentle, open minded, really interested and generous person. I loved and enjoyed his company at Irish racecourses and in Baden-Baden. His humor was unique and he tought me a lot about horse racing. We won and we lost together and Joe will always be a positive role model to be a family dad and to grow old gracefully.
I am thinking of you and wishing you strength during this time of grief.

Thinking of you Joan and all the McDonnell family. Joe was an inspirational lecturer and later friend to me, since l left Shannon College 30 years ago. As a student who enjoyed finance at Shannon, we connected. I called him for advice over the years and he always had time for his students, past and present, and was a genuinely lovely man who gave great and sound advice. He will be truly missed. May he rest in peace. God bless.

Sincere condolences to Joan and the McDonnell family on the loss of Joe. I first met Joe forty years ago as a student on placement at the Innovation Centre in Castletroy. Long before 'random acts of kindness' became a thing, he would leave the odd Club Milk on my desk along with an encouraging word.
We were later to become colleagues and friends at the Shannon College of Hotel Management, where Joe played a pivotal role in the introduction of the BComm and alliance with the University. I had the privilege of working alongside Joe for fifteen years. His commitment to the students and welfare of the College was inspirational. I never thought of him then as a mentor, but that's what he was, quietly present, offering words of wisdom and support. Mostly I will remember the fun times, the long chats peppered with healthy debate and his quick wit. Bon voyage Joe, you made this world a better place for so many of us.
