Spent 3 very enjoyable & formative years being entertained encouraged & advised by Joe in SPD labs in St James’ back in the late 1980s. One of those warm characters who left an indelible imprint in the memory …..thought I’d forgotten all that until a few years ago when I encountered his reincarnation in some dodgy European Irish pub when I first met Caitriona….& it all came to life again !

Joe was a classmate throughout our school days. He had a great attitude to life and a wicked sense of humour. He was very dedicated in his work. In discussing public affairs, he thought matters through carefully but could graciously consider the views of others who disagreed.
Early in the year, we had a walk around the old haunts of the Basin and and back park. We sat on the bench opposite Kelly's Lane on which the gang sat for years discussing how we could save the world. He was hopeful of a good outcome to his illness but it was not to be. He will have to make the planned album in a better place now.
Condolence to Joe's family on their irreplaceable loss.

We were deeply saddened to hear about Joe’s passing. Joe's warm spirit, infectious smile, his quick sense of humour and love for life made him a pleasure to be around. His guitar playing brought so much happiness to everyone, and it was always a treat to hear him play, whether it was a casual evening or a lively neighbourly party, Joe made every moment more special.

Deepest sympathy to the family on Joe’s passing. He was such an important part of the research community at TCD / St James’s, first in the Sir Patrick Duns labs and later in the Institute of Molecular Medicine. Joe was always kind, thoughtful, humorous and generous with his time and was part of the “glue” that held us all together both scientifically and socially. With sincere condolences.
