Very sad to hear today of Josephine's death. She was a kind, gentle and valued colleague. Sincere sympathy to her extended family. May she rest in peace.

Just saw Josephine’s death notice. I am shocked and truly saddened. We had both been looking forward to having lunch at Kai- one of our favourite places, after lockdown.

I was saddened to hear of Josephine's passing. For me she represents the combination of humanity and intellect that should be at the heart of university education.
Josephine taught me Italian when I was a first year undergraduate more than 30 years ago and I have fond memories of her classes. Her passion for the language and the country helped inspire my own abiding love of all things Italian.
A gracious, kind and cultured lady. May she rest in peace.

I had the occasion to meet you and Josie when we both happened to be on holidays in Glenagragra at the same time not having seen each other since leaving school many years back. We spent a lovely few hours catching up and chatting over a great meal at your childhood home in Glenagragra with you, Josie and Jackie RIP, There was there was a warm kindness from all of you which has left me with a lovely memory. She was known to us as a lecturer - since 1980s (Patricia) and friend (Frank and Patricia), fellow attendee at the First Fridays, and also as someone with wide interests, which enriched her interaction with others. I was shocked to hear of Josephine's unexpected death having spoken to her recently on the phone. She was a loyal and stalwart member of the Italian Dept in NUIG who worked so hard to make students fully enjoy everything that Italian Studies offered in terms of language and culture. She worked hard to ensure that the Italian Dept prospered and for that we owe her a huge debt. Students always responded enthusiastically to her teaching and she cared so well both for our students in Italy and Italian students in Galway. Most of all she was a loyal and wonderful colleague and you always felt good when you met her. She will be greatly missed. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

Really sorry to hear of Josephine's unexpected death. Only last March she contacted me for advice on how to get published in an appropriate NUI Galway publication a tribute to her recently deceased former colleague, Dr Ottavio di Fidio, which she and others had prepared - a typical demonstration of her thoughtfulness, loyalty.and sense of propriety. Josephine has been one of the most accomplished, generous, brilliant colleague I have met in my career as a Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Bologna and Trento in Italy.
Together with Colm they have been inspiring to a profound degree inasmuch as they combined erudition and ethics.
They do have a place in my heart, and in my prayers for eternal happines.
May they rest in peace, and may Lil be nurtured by their wonderful memories.
