Karen Scully

I knew Karen in the 1980’s as a VSL , while she was my mentor as I did my wood badge training , then when I joined her on the National Training Team . Some people have an ability to see a version of you / potential you never realised was even there. The phrase is often used of someone being an Impact person ; that was very much Karen. She was such great fun ( that laugh) so passionate about Venture Scouts , fearless about fighting for the recognition of it and helping promote and encourage its development at every opportunity. Her intelligence and rapier wit was awesome. A True Scout ; Gone Home . Condolences to her family .

Karen was one of the first people I met when I returned to scouting as a scout leader. Her wit, energy and full bodied laugh will always stay with me and her company is one of the reasons I continued to be involved. Her irreverence and fun were always to the fore in everything she did.

I was so disappointed to find out that I could not be there to see Sculldog home, I'm sure the stories about her exploits went late into the night and that there were many happy reunions.

My sincere condolences to Yani, Jono and family on the passing of a great woman. She will be sorely missed and impossible to replace for so many.

Karen was my leader for several wonderful years in 6th Leeson Park Ventures. Since word reached me that she hadn't long left, the memories have been rising. I see her most clearly of all sitting by the campfire at the site in Powerscourt, wryly observing all our teenage antics and anarchic tendencies and occasionally gracing them with her gorgeous big laugh. She was an exceptional person – forthright and fair, steadfast, warm and occasionally fierce, irreverent and mischievous. Without saying much, she let you know she saw you in a rounded way and had time for you. I would've trusted her utterly in an hour of need. The courage she brought to her difficult last couple of years comes as no surprise.
Regrettably, I couldn't travel to Dublin, but am very grateful to have attended the service via livestream. My deepest condolences to her children, grandchildren and many friends in their loss. To Karen, my love and my profound thanks.

I studied with Karen in UCD 14 years ago doing a Masters in Equality studies. She was incredibly intelligent, witty and great fun and sharp witted too. I am so sorry to hear of her passing.

My deepest sympathy to John, Jimmy and all the Scully Family, so sorry to hear the sad news, Karen and myself were involved in Venture Scouting in the 80's and 90's , she looked after two Venture Leaders in West Cork in the last weeks of their lives, I will never forget her kindness.
