To Michael and all the O'Connell Family. Our sincerest condolences on the very sad passing of Karl. He was a gentleman and will not be forgotten. The surprise news of his passing has us stunned with sadness.

I am so shocked and saddened to hear this news and want to share my deepest condolences.

I first met Karl when we started in Pres in 1990 and spent many days walking through Cork City after school to get the Ringaskiddy bus home. We were well suited to each other as we were both terrible at rugby and we had much more fun talking about the latest cars we were dreaming about.

We also went on many long cycle rides together; Karl was so proud of his Muddy Fox mountain bike and got to some incredible speeds on the hills around Cobh. As we got a bit older, we were still terrible at sports (although loved watching Man Utd) but it didn’t matter when Karl got the use of a Renault 9.

After school, I’m afraid that we drifted apart when we went to different colleges and I wish I had made more of an effort now to stay in touch but, as with so many things, life gets in the way. For whatever it’s worth though, I spent a long time over the last few days talking about Karl to my own children here in London as my son is almost the exact same age I was when I first met Karl in Pres.

It’s really hard to believe that this has happened to someone who was such a big part of my childhood - and so incredibly unfair to all of you who he leaves behind. I hope that you will want some small comfort in this note and I would be keen to share more of this in Cork some day soon.
