It is with deep regret that I learned of the death of Kevin, one of Keelogues' finest gentlemen and a schoolmate of mine in Keelogues National School. I well remember playing football with him during school lunch breaks on a stony and uneven playground, and often wondered how on earth we escaped serious injury! We afterwards played football together in John Kearns's field and it was at this time that Kevin began to display his ability as a footballer of the highest calibre. Thereafter he was a central figure in the forward line of the Ballyvary team from the mid-50s, where his performance, passion and dedication was an inspiration to his team-mates.
I loved meeting Kevin at mass on my visits to Keelogues over the years, when we would discuss the highs and lows of Mayo football, of which he had a profound knowledge. In his lifetime, Kevin was a caring person of conviction, integrity and humility, and his passing is a great loss to his siblings in New York, Manchester and his beloved Mayo. May he rest in peace.
