I was sorry to hear of the recent death of Kieron, a contemporary at RTÉ News and an NUJ colleague. By coincidence I was thinking of him on Sunday 26th, the date of his death, as I attended a Latin Mass in Wexford. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílís.

Kieron’s Wood

How lachrymose the dryads' eyes
survey the empty space
an Irish tree once occupied –
the Elder of its race!

From moth’s pupa, the ‘small dark one’
sparked the Emerald Isle:
with aos si spawning wood folk
to charm the dendrophile.

Their saplings – swaying…climbing –
parting to form the glade
wherein the welkin came to dance:
they sang and prayed and played.

So while we mourn the void
where once the trom stood tall,
his roots stretch deep beneath the earth
and still embrace us all.

Catherine and family,
I was so very sad to hear of Kieron's passing; I remember his knowledge and love of the English language, his attention to detail, and his great intellect. He made every newsroom debate more interesting and he was a refreshing, funny, supportive and challenging friend and colleague. In those old newspaper days reporting and sub-editing didn't always see eye-to-eye on our 10-hour Friday shifts, but Kieron - Woody - was always welcome with his copy corrections on our side of the house. Dear Tabitha, Laura, Sarah and Tim, I know how much you loved your dear dad, and I feel deeply for you in your sorrow. From the time I was a small boy, visiting Moth with my mum in the pre-Elderslie Road era, to the age of Dragon Evenings in the years after I moved to London in the early Eighties, Kieron was like an older brother to me. To say Kieron Wood was an incredible human being is an understatement.
The last time that I can remember Kieron, we were still in school uniform. So to read about his life's accomplishments, is awe inspiring.
He is now flying above, with the Angels and Saints in Heaven
And course with his dear Moth, who will cradle him in her arms, as they rise into the protection of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.

Dear Madeleine, Laurence, Jeremy, Cathy and all the lovely family, we are so sorry to hear about Kieron and send you our sincere condolences.
We had the pleasure of meeting him at some of the fun Wood parties in London and it was clear to see at the one in Coventry last week that his gift for entertaining has been inherited by the family. May you all find comfort from being together in his name right now and especially at his funeral tomorrow and share loads of great memories to help cope on the tougher days thereafter. And last but not least, may the special gift of his new little grandchild who entered this world within days of his departure bring lots of joy and help ease some of the pain..God Bless xx

My sincere condolences to Madeleine and her family.

A little over fifty years ago, possibly influenced by an over indulgence of Maison Rouge, Kieron and I formed our own Faux Masonic Lodge, of which we were the only two brethren.

I’m not convinced our secret hand shake would have gone unnoticed by the uninitiated. I am certain though, he would forgive me for revealing the following: Our secret hand shake consisted of hopping on one leg with one arm tucked under the knee of the other, whilst shaking hands. All this combined with winking at each other.

We carried out this nonsense whenever we met, even after a 20 year gap. Such was the humour I was privileged to share with Kieron. May he rest in peace.
