Kilian Duignan

Shocked and saddened to hear news of Kilians passing. As my once boss In C & F Quadrant, I have great memories of Kilian and the laughs we shared in there. Never forgot. Rest in peace.

Part 1

1989 was our J1 summer. Kilian and I were first to travel. Roger Duffy, Dave Casey, Joe Foyle would come soon after. We got to Boston, went to the Harvard housing office and sub-let an apartment on Ransom Road in Brighton from Nancy Gould.

Our scouting work over, we had a burger at the Taste-E and went to the movies - Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The summer of 1989 was an incredible year for the movies. Apart from Indiana Jones, there was the first Batman movie, The Abyss, Uncle Buck, When Harry Met Sally, Dead Poets Society and the one that Kilian loved the most - Do The Right Thing. After we all saw it, we debated the ending and whether or not Mookie should have thrown the trash can through the window of Sal’s. As always, Kilian was the one to perfectly frame the moral of the movie.

When I think of Kilian, I think of how he was a big brother to so many of us. He was the first to introduce us to music from Nirvana, The Pixies, Tracy Chapman, Public Enemy. He was the one who dispensed the wisest advice, who enforced the rules during a pickup soccer game. The first of us who had to grow up because he was going to be first to be a parent. I think about Kilian in the 40+ years I’ve known him - his integrity, humour, compassion and fundamental decency. How his work reflected those values - mentoring and supporting those who wanted to turn an idea into a business, to turn a dream into reality.

Part 2.

How over the last few years he bore his illness with dignity, bravery and a profound appreciation of Science and what it meant for him and his life. And how, at the end, he was still making the right choices to stop aggressive chemotherapy and be home surrounded by his family.

And I feel bereft. Like a supporting beam or foundation of my life has been pulled out from under. And if I feel like this - having seen Kilian only once or twice a year for the last 20 or so years - how unmoored must feel his wife, his children, his siblings, his parents. All those he loved and who loved him. And I don’t have a solution other than to say that we must all try and support each other, as he supported all of us. And to ask a question when confronted with a moral dilemma - “What would Kilian do?”and then do that.
