Kirby Kearns

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Kirby. I travelled and worked with him in Australia in the late 80s, and found his energy and humour so inspiring. We kept in touch and it was wonderful to see him again last year in New York. He was a kind and generous soul to me and I miss him terribly. My love passes to those who loved him too.

Kirby , it was with great sadness I heard of your passing , I had hoped to catch up with you again when I was in Qatar next or in Youghal, you gave me a great welcome and opened lots of doors for me in Doha .. til we meet again my friend !

It was the summer of 2005 when we first met - you’d given Dari his big break in film production and we were celebrating at the old haunt that was the Oasis before heading off to start university. There’s so much nostalgia in that one sentence it’s hard to comprehend. The years that followed were full of random encounters and laughs. You introduced us to some magical music and film - bits of art that heavily influenced our tastes and personal interests. Your small one man band soon became one of the big shows in town, but you always had time for a pint or three, and the kindness of heart to offer words of advice from a life well lived. Man, your stories and experiences were incredible. And funny! As the years moved on we fell out of touch but I often thought of you fondly, and now sorely wish I acted on the notion to reach out for your advice once more. I know it would have been warmly reciprocated.

The sadness of your passing will be with us a long time, but the joy of our memories will stay forever. To the good times, brother. Rest in peace. We’ll meet again at the great gig in the sky.

I received a call from my mother on Tuesday evening to tell me that Kirby had passed away.

It's been a little while since Kirby and I last spoke.

When I tell people the story of how
"I met a drunk Irish man in a bar and after chatting for 15 minutes he offered me a job" it still puts a smile on my face.

Irregardless of the time that has passed since I worked for, spoke to (and drank with) Kirby in Qatar he was and will forever remain an incredibly influential person in my life who saw something in me, even I didn't know I had.

Kirby stayed in my share house in the late 1980s, and he worked at Coca Cola before educating himself in his chosen craft and landing a job at Channel Seven in Adelaide, as a cameraman. We had some great times together and many family get-togethers with my mum when she was alive. He was always so generous, charming and warm - it was very hard to wipe a smile off his face. It was a pleasure to know him and share part of my life with him. My deepest condolences to his immediate family and his daughter, my niece Aislinn.

Kirby provided me the first stepping stone on my career path. I'll be forever grateful he gave a spotty faced teenager a chance to work with him, learn about the industry and share in so many laughs. I regret not keeping in touch more but I'm so glad we caught up over some beers and mince pies last Xmas and reminissed about all of the good times we shared. Kirby had an energy around him that was electric. His banter was always on top form.

His laugh was contagious, his spirit kinetic, Lighting up every room like a storm.

Now that he's gone, the world feels less bright, But his energy still lingers, warm.

So sorry to loose our lovely new neighbour so soon. He was too young and too cheerful to pass away.
