Behind the house. In the meadow.
I look up at the stars,
Of a night,
When he used to be here.
When he used to go,
stooped to the shed
for the sticks.
To fill up the range and
listen to the whistle of the kettle singing.
And watch the embers like,
little molten crystals drop,
Into the pan hissing and raging to be quietly expelled.
And above him the clock ticking the only sound.
The telly with the sound turned down til
The News.
The pot that had the bacon in it earlier, steeping on the draining board.
The porridge soaking for the morn.. Yellow it has soaked up all the water.
He is drifting in and out. Eyes opening and closing, hearing voices of long ago.
Smiling and vexation both appearing at the corners of his mouth.
His tea is nearly empty in his cup and he reaches for it. The cool drop bringing him awake and he reaches for the teapot and it is nearly empty too and he is tilting it til the last drop
There on the table he has a biscuit. Broken in half.
He is dipping one while he is eating the other in the kitchen filled with yellow light and yellow food. He is breaking the sugar in the bowl with his spoon and extracting a shard and watching it soften and slide against the side of the cup. And he is drinking it quick chewing the grains. And he is using his spoon to get the rest and feed himself what's left.
Dedicated to Larry (and Betty) who made a massive impact on my life as the light and salt of the earth on the Barnbawn Road.
