Sincere condolences to the Shiel family on the sad passing of Larry. When I started teaching in Holy Child B.N.S. in 2002, Larry was a great source of information, wisdom and practical help. He was a very talented artist and his fantastic murals on the corridors of the school have endured to this day. He was gifted on computers and a mine of information for those of us who needed help. Larry had a deep love for his family and I am sure that he will be terribly missed by them all. May Larry rest in peace.

He was a gifted teacher, an astute observer of human behavior, a wise and inspiring mentor and a very respected and valued colleague and friend. In his multifaceted giftedness and passion for both life and learning, he exemplified St. Iraenius’s idea of the “Glory of God” as, “the fully alive human person.” His was a wholehearted “Yes” to life and all its alluring visions and beckoning horizons. He had a “Universal” cast of mind which he ever deployed in the service of Truth, Beauty and Goodness. The physicist and mathematician in him sought to discern the proper order of things in Being. He had an easy Swiftian facility of wit, irony and satire with which he forensically unmasked appearance from reality. He was a man of deep faith in God and His Goodness in both the universal and the incarnate aspects of the Divine reality, which he believed grounded all being. He knew there was no “cheap grace.” His open trust and faith in “the Man above” (his own homely phrase), sustained him in resilience, courage and equanimity to the very end. There is "a green field" beyond. In faith and hope we will all meet you there again Larry.

Sincere condolences to all of the Shiel family. I had to good fortune to teach alongside Larry when I was appointed in 1975 to Larkhill School. It was my firs appointment. Larry was so kind, helpful and guide to me in those early years. I loved to see the joy in his face when his beautiful girls and their Mum called to collect him each day. They ran around the yard,waiting for Daddy to appear.The little boy can later. Rest in Peace Larry.
