I have known Lawrence for more than fifty years, during which time he has been a highly regarded, cooperative and supportive colleague. He was a loyal and dedicated member and Fellow of Trinity College where he has taught and worked in the School of Mathematics since 1961. He was an excellent teacher, attentive to his students who greatly valued his lectures and by whom he is remembered with appreciation and affection. He had a deep commitment to his subject with which he had a creative engagement which continued throughout his life. This could be sensed by his students and was reflected in his lectures. Lawrence will be remembered with affection by his colleagues and students, collaborators and many friends.

Deepest sympathy to Martin and the Crane Family at this time.
Deepest condolences to Uncle Martin and your family. May your father rest in peace
To Martin and Lawrence's family, our team and I had the pleasure of working on several projects with Lawrence during the late 1990s and early 2000s and we found him to be a wonderful colleague. From synthetic fibres to steam turbines, no problem was beyond his methodical and confident approach. He was also great fun and we really enjoyed his company.
Martin, Penny & Ben
We extend our deepest sympathies to you and your family. May the soul of your father be at peace with our heavenly Father.
Stephen and Family, sorry to hear the news about your father
On behalf of all the staff in the School of Maths, I send sincere sympathies to Lawrence's family. I had the pleasure to know him for a short time as a colleague and to meet him at School events and at our School's Christmas lunch every year. His passion for mathematics was clear and his always kind and encouraging words were deeply appreciated.
Dear Martin, my sincere condolences to you and your family on the passing of your dad. Larry Crane (as we knew him – apologies for the informality) taught me 431 Fluid Mechanics starting Michaelmas Term 1983. I can still remember his lectures as he made a difficult subject accessible to all of his class and I have the treasured notes on this subject on my desk as I write this. It was particularly gratifying to subsequently learn that his son was a trusted colleague. Always remember that as well as through his family, his legacy lives on through the knowledge and understanding that he gave to so many, and will continue to do so as long as we, his students, continue to draw breath. May his soul rest in peace.
Sincerest sympathies to you all. I took a course on partial differential equations with Professor Crane in the late 90s; he was a splendid teacher and lovely man who, despite his brilliance, taught in a clear, straightforward manner without any airs and graces.
Dear Stephen, Martin, Alison, Cathleen and our younger cousins, such sad news to receive of Olly's passing. He will always be fondly remembered as a kind and wise uncle as well an inspiring gentleman.

Lawrence, whom we ungrateful 1960s undergrads called Larry, had a sharp mind, a kind heart and a twinkle in his eye while trying to convey the wonders of applied maths to the multitude. In the 70s and 80s I found him a wise and insightul colleague while I was lecturing in CS. My condolences to Stephen, Martin and all the family.
My sympathies to the Crane family on the passing of the wonderful Professor Crane. I have great memories of him, have kept my lecture notes from his second year applied maths course to us physicists (somewhere). I have often told my son about his fantastic lectures on angular momentum in applied maths, which variously keep his spinning top upright, his bicycle from falling over, and explain the Coriolis Effect of the bathwater going down the plughole. One of the best teachers I ever had. May Prof Crane rest in peace.
I am truly sorry to hear of the loss of your father. Please accept our condolences and he Rest In Peace.

It was my privilege to have had Professor Crane as a lecturer back in the 70s, and to get to know him, more recently, as Lawrence in our work with INCA. I remember him as a warm and kind man with a sharp intellect and a determined curiosity. My sincere condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.

My sincere condolences to the family of Prof. Crane. I was very sorry to hear this sad news. I will miss our regular chats over a coffee at Tillies Cafe in Clontarf. A great mentor, colleague and good friend. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
Dear Martin,
My deepest sympathy on the death of your father. My thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time.
I had the privilege to have been a student of Prof Crane in Applied Mathematics 1984-1988. He was a gentleman and a scholar of the kind that is very rare. He will remain ever in my memory as one of my best ever teachers: a twinkle in his eye as he explained the complexities of the nabla operator.

Sunset and evening star
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar
When I put out to sea.
When I put out to sea
When I put out to sea
May there be no moaning of the bar
When I put out to sea.
Twilight and evening bell
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell
When I embark.
When I embark
When I embark
May there be no sadness of farewell
When I embark.
But such a tide as moving seems asleep
Too full for sound and foam
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Turns again home
Turns again home
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
For though from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.

I have very fond memories not only of my time as his student at Trinity and our graduation ceremony. Whenever I visited Ireland I was welcome in Stiles Road. A number of times Lawrence visited me in Germany and despite me not working on fluid dynamics anymore he always managed to get me interested in his latest ideas. I will keep him in my prayers.
