Dear Father Bracken,

Over the quarter-century of your Priesthood, you’ve consoled countless bereaved families, yet, like everyone, nothing could have prepared you for the loss of a dear family member, in this case, your father.

Professionally, you’re theoretically familiar with the successive stages of grieving, but you’re now faced with dealing with them in a practical way. Your ancestral family oasis is now stripped of one of its two key pillars, where, on your visits, you’ll henceforth notice an empty chair.

We wouldn’t exist but for our parents, so, in that sense, we could be regarded as the very embodiment of a cocktail of their respective characters.

Given the strong physical resemblance between yourself and the death-notice photo of your father, and that you seem to mirror how he is described by people who knew him, he will surely live on in you.

As you return to Churchtown, after you and your family have laid your father to rest, I pray that you’ll feel him supporting you in your grieving and urging you on in your ministry.

May God rest his gentle soul, and grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss. Amen.
