I was saddened to learn today of Liam Fitzgerald’s passing from this life. My sincere condolences to Bríd and all the Fitzgerald family. Liam was an honest politician in what mattered in public affairs in Dáil and Seanad Éireann. He was a live wire, full of energy, a fun person (we had a few good laughs over some stories in the 1980s), a hard worker, someone who cared deeply about politics at the national level, economics, Irish language, and he cared about the plight of Northern nationalists. He did some impressive research on issues back when TDs had no assistants. He made a significant impact on occasions. Liam was respected in the constituency and in Leinster House. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

Very sincere condolences to all of the Fitzgerald family on Liam's passing. As a former Dáil colleague of Liam's, I admired and respected his personal warmth, friendship and gentlemanly nature. May the good man rest in peace.
