I worked on the Surgical Ward in CUH & had huge admiration for his wonderful way with patients and he was a brilliant surgeon known far & wide.He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. So very sad to learn of Liam’s passing. He was without doubt one of the finest surgeons I have ever known. He was also a wonderful mentor, trainer and human being. Gifted with a sharp sense of humor and keen observation of all things around him, he brought a unique opinion to life.
I hope that Marie and his family will find some consolation in the celebration of a wonderful life and that time will heal the pain of his passing.

Liam was an incredibly gifted man, a great surgeon, a great colleague, a great advisor on all matters medical and non medical...patients were luckey to be treated by him... He will be sadly missed.

One of a few inspirational senior consultants I encountered in the course of my later UCC medical school training decades ago. I witnessed him break bad news to a newly married couple when there was no prospect of life changing surgery but the compassion, sincerity and genuine sadness with which he did so left a lasting impression on me which I’ve always remembered.

I find it very hard to fully express how highly I think of Prof Kirwan.
He really was a really amazing man, sure he was an excellent surgeon, but he was also very kind, extremely humane, but very human, while he was very aware of his own ability - he was also humble.
Personally- he was extremely good to me.
We go through this life and get to meet some excellent people- WOK is etched high up on my list!
His passing is a huge loss for you all, and I am so sorry for you
But take solace in knowing how much good he brought to the lives of tens of thousands!

I have just learned with great regret of the passing of Liam Kirwan. This man was the genuine article as a Surgeon and was responsible for passing on his knowledge to a myriad of would be surgeons. He was a man of no pretensions and had an enviable skill set. My condolences to his family.

Dear Mrs Kirwan,
My dad Pat Cahill was a close friend of Liam's dad Bill, worked for the same organisation, and played golf together, Dad was very happy when Liam was my teacher when I was a student in UCC. I enjoyed reading his books, and he and I had a bit of correspodence while he was out in Asia teaching. I have the best memories of him.

To Marie, Janet, Mary and all the Kirwan family, may we offer our sincere condolences on Liam’s passing. He was a fantastic surgeon, teacher and friend. He was certainly the most important influence on my surgical career and inspired a generation of young doctors into a career in surgery. He had a fantastic way with words and always maintained a great sense of humour. He was an exceptional man and will be sadly missed.

Liam, as your ex-Registrar, I was in awe of your gifted skills. You were a ‘Master of your Art’ in the operating theatre. As far as I was concerned, you were always at the top of your game. You were never without a good plan, formidable knowledge, common sense, unshakeable confidence & your quite sense of humour.
As a man, you went about your business in an unpretentious way, doing Trojan work for the people of Cork City and beyond.
As my mentor and teacher, I valued and respected you. You were greatly instrumental in my own career and many of my then junior colleagues on the ‘Cork Pre Fellowship Surgical Rotation’.
Your family, your patients, your students & colleagues are rightfully proud of you.
