Liam Smyth

I offer my most sincere condolences to the Smyth family upon the death of Liam recently. I thank him for all of his work promoting amateur astronomy in Ireland during his lifetime. He was always a pleasure to converse with whenever I met him. He will be most sorely missed by all those who knew him.

I am sure that I speak on behalf of many members of the Irish Astronomical Society in expressing my condolences to Maureen and family. Liam was a dedicated observer of the skies with his telescopes and shared his knowledge of astronomy with us over many years at Society meetings and later with public observing events at Sandymount and elsewhere. He will be greatly missed, RIP

Liam Smyth was one of the most accomplished, inspiring and professional of 'amateur' astronomers with a huge range of knowledge and experience which he shared readily and with modesty. He always welcomed new people into the field with his kind, gentle manner and always obliging when one sought help. He will be much missed.
