Lionel was one of a kind. His spirit, style and substance will live on in those who knew him. He brought a unique humour and rigour to his many areas of interest - and managed to infect others with them. Whether it was procurement, revolutionary politics, sport or historical gossip, you could never be quite sure where an anecdote would end. I will always remember the warmth and friendship he extended to me from the first day I walked into the office. Thank you to Jeanne, Liz, Lionel Jr, Jack and Hugo, Aideen and Caithriona for your moving and apt tributes at the funeral - we will all miss him so much.

My dearest cousin Jeanne, we are thinking of you and Lionel’s family as you go through life without your beloved Lionel by your side. I will remember Lionel for having the kindest smile and the warmest hugs. I will miss the chats, and the laughs on Christmas Day every year. He was Kai’s biggest supporter with his Athletics. Kai will continue to do him proud! Lionel was a pure gentleman and one of kind and we are forever grateful to have known and loved him for all these years. Much love and hugs ❤️
My deepest sympathies to Jeanne, the extended McCarthy family and all the Greenville team.
For Jeanne, for Lionel’s beloved children and grandchildren, for the grieving Greenville family. Lionel made an incredible impact across the Public Service and beyond. His ability to stimulate thought, to engage with learners and ultimately, find effective solutions, is a wonderful legacy. Every conversation I had with Lionel was energising, entertaining and ultimately informative. Too many revelations to mention but the fact his Father built our house was top of the list. And his empathy and smile endeared him to me and so many others. It is a truth that "Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann".

Noreen and Liam Fahy
