Deepest sympathy to Aine Brid and the Enright family on the passing of Lorcan, a neighbour and friend for many years. May he rest in peace.

Many condolences to the Enright family. Lorcan regularly took time out of his day when I would just arrive on my bike to help him weed the garden. He passed on his learnings to me at an early age about horticulture.

I never forget the day when he had me white washing the lower part of ash trees in his garden that he was growing unbeknownst to me at the time to offer new neighbors as welcome gifts for their gardens. He said that it’s an effective way to preserve the trees thin bark and keep rabbits/ hares from chewing the bark.

I worked a lot that day and he told me that when the time comes, the hard work will pay off……. Those trees now line the walls and avenues at Rathlahine farm.

He brought me over to a vegetable row close to the stone wall and asked me if I wanted a healthy snack. I said no snacks are healthy, he then explained to me about different pea variants and how important the amount of sun, soil nutrients and irrigation is for each pea variant. He handed me, what I now know is a snow pea pod. He explained the benefits of a well cultivated snow pea and its nutritional benefits, especially as a snack. I’ve never found a snow pea nor sugar snap pea to come anywhere near the taste of that.

Lorcans generosity of his time and open armed nature to current and new residing people in the community will be unmatched.

The only time I witnessed him being frustrated, he didn’t even curse, he said “blooming”….. well everything bloomed in that garden.

So sorry to hear of Lorcan passing away. We were good friends many years ago when I’d stay with my aunt, Mary McCormack, and her husband, Martin, who lived in the Granahan/Ballycar area. I was a young lad from London at the time, and we had trouble understanding each other’s accents! Such good times we had with auntie Mary. I remember his mother, too. Those were good days. May Lorcan Rest in Peace and be reunited with his parents in Heaven.
