Marcus A Sweeney

Sincere condolences to you Irene and your family on the recent sad passing of your husband, Marcus.
At our recent Committee Meeting of Galway Motor Club the Directors were saddened to hear the news of his passing. Marcus held a key position in Galway Motor Club in the 1970s, and was remembered for his energy and great foresight in establishing the Galway International Rally as a premier motor sport event on the International calendar. The event still takes place on the first weekend of February annually.
Along with that, he was a conduit in the formation of the only Irish and UK combined International Rally Championship. The first year of the championship was 1978, and the championship still retains its position as the premier International Championship on this Island, almost 50 years later. His company, Hanley Engineering, were early commercial sponsors.
Marcus is remembered for being a gentleman to work with, with great energy and foresight and leadership qualities.

Only just learned with deep sadness of the passing of Marcus. To Irene and Fiachra our sincerest and deepest condolences. Myself and Geraldine both have very very fond memories of our time together in Galway with Marcus and Irene. I so enjoyed working with Marcus who was a great engineer, leader, motivator and friend and learned so much from and with him. May he rest in peace.

With sadness I heard of the death of Marcus.
We were attending the same lectures for a Master's Degree at Maynooth University.
Marcus was very proud of the restoration of the historical mill that he owned. He showed us co-students the impressive progress that he had made, both with the actual mill and the thesis of which the mill was the subject.
There can be no doubt that this was a subject that would have merited a 'Summa cum Laude'.
But apart from his impressive work, Marcus was a very nice and highly regarded member of our group. His comments were always a positive contribution.
He will be missed.

Very sorry to hear of the passing of Marcus. He was a lovely man and always had great time for the workers at Techrete. Whenever he would walk up the factory he would always stop to talk,ask how you are and have a little joke with you before going about his business. Marcus will be missed around the factory.

It was a pleasure to sit in the MA local history class in Maynooth with Marcus and listen to his contributions in lectures. He was an absolute gentleman and forever helpful to everyone . AR DHEIS DE AR AN ANAM .

My late husband, Owen, and I met Marcus shooting with Gerry Merrick. We loved his passion for life, and shooting. We both felt privileged to have met him and I know Owen, if here, would be joining me now in expressing our commiserations at his passing. We spent happy afternoons watching Ireland play rugby as well as shooting over the years. In recent times, after Owen’s passing in 2022, Marcus was so kind and supportive to me at the annual December Delphi shoots, always a perfect gentleman. He was the best of men and will be sorely missed. I am sure we shall raise a glass to him at Delphi this coming December. My heartfelt condolences to the family.

We were so sorry to hear of the passing of dear Marcus and extend our condolences to Irene & family. As past office bearers in MMOI, we remember with fondness our visit to Fancroft Mill and entertaining Marcus & Irene when they visited us at Tully Mill in Donegal. At the many MMOI meetings throughout Ireland which we attended, we recall Marcus’s lovely smile and congenial manner - always so easy to talk to. He will be sadly missed.

I’m so sorry to hear about the passing of Marcus. He was an absolute gentleman and helped me in many ways. When we were building the Balbriggan factory for him he was just an absolute pleasure to deal with. He will be sadly missed and it was a privilege to have known Marcus.
