For 50odd years, I've always wondered what it meant. I'd pass the white pillars at the end of the avenue and say "I really must ask"... However the question was filed away and put on the back burner ...till now.
And so, with the sad news of Mrs B's passing, I am brought right back to a time when milk was delivered to the home in a 10gallon churn, a time of tyre swings and bonfires.
