Last Friday was a historic day in my life. I attended the cremation of my dear sister Margaret in Shannon and then followed on to a memorial service in her honour in The Clayton Hotel. When I entered the first floor auditorium close to the beginning of the memorial service, I experienced a sense of shock at the attendance. There was about three hundred people seated there to celebrate her life and times. This was beautifully complimented by an extended slide show. There was a further two hundred people tuned in on a zoom link. It was the most deeply humbling experience of my life and I began to wonder if this woman, my sister Margaret, had been leading a double life -something that I knew nothing about.

Margaret’s ‘secret’ was in cultivating the bounty of human relationships throughout her life in her family, relations and friends. Most paramount was her love and devotion to her children, grand children and great grand children. Over the course of the last few days, there were many, many people who came forward, especially former work colleagues giving ‘evidence’ of Margaret’s generosity and how she was quick to help them out in their time of need. Listening to these stories was truly moving and as a consequence has jolted me to revise the priorities in my own life. Maybe Margaret’s life and her discovery of the ultimate secret can best be summed up in the simple words of St John of The Cross: Pour love in and you will draw love out!

When your best friend dies there is a gap that cant be filled by anyone or words and when this person was someone who only showed kindness, empathy and love to everyone who ever had the privilege to know her and experience her soft gentle nature then this world is a much sadder place without her presence for she truly was a lady of the highest integrity in everything she did and stood for.
To all of Margarets children who I know and love, her grandchildren and great grandchildren my heart breaks for you all, to her two sisters and two brothers you were so loved by Margaret and I felt I knew you all personally as she spoke so loving and kindly about you always. The same about her nephews, nieces and in-laws always with love and graciousness.
Margarets family were her life and she lived it with the goal of showing that love in whatever form she could.
Margaret and I kept each other going through the ups and downs of life always there for each other.
We always parted with the words “we have come this far we wont give up now, we will go another mile” we had a goal and a wonderful hope that we cherished for more than 40 years. You went that last mile Margaret and so my dearest friend rest until your favourite scripture is fulfilled.

I will miss you more than I can say. We know that our friendship was built on a solid foundation just like your favourite poem by Seamus Heaney said in “Scaffolding” the walls were firm and secure.

I'm so sad to hear this news, and I'm thinking of you all - especially our lovely friends Naomi, Dan, Ben, Sam & Levi.

"I have hope toward God, which hope these men also look forward to, that there is going to be a resurrection" (Acts 24:15) Losing your mum is like losing a limb and these words will no doubt read a little differently to you now, as they do for me.

I am so gutted that you are experiencing this huge loss and difficult time and I'm hoping you can all hold on tight to all the best memories, write them down, chat them out, cry or laugh - let them keep you going until you get to hug your mum, mother-in-law, granny again.

Sincere sympathy to all of Margaret’s family. I had the good fortune to work with her for many years. She was a wonderful support to me particularly when I took over as principal of St Joseph’s. She was dedicated to her work and the welfare of the pupils, parents and staff. Like many others I developed a strong personal relationship with Margaret and was so sad when I heard of her illness. She was a very special person and a great loss to you all. May she rest in peace.

We've known Margaret for the last 8 years. We were neighbours. There wasn't a single time during all those years that she didn't acknowledge, smile, chat or joke with us whenever our paths crossed. We had so many great conversations about a whole range of different things.

Margaret was the best neighbour anyone could have wished for. She reached out and helped us everytime we needed it and bought lovely gifts for our two children when they came along. We feel somewhat comforted that we did the best we could in return. We are just so deeply saddened that we lost Margaret our beautiful neighbour so soon.

Margaret was my right hand lady in St Joseph’s for many years, and I can only describe her as a perfect lady. She was a wonderful secretary, ensuring that everything was done in a timely and efficient manner. She was always kind, caring, calm and generous and never lost her patience regardless of how busy the school was, and it was a very busy place and difficult to take care of everyone’s requests. But she managed it and always with a smile on her face. Margaret had a great sense of humour and we had many laughs together. She was a wonderful support to me professionally and personally. You, her family were her world and her face lit up when she spoke of you all, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Cherish the memories of a wonderful mother and friend.She has left a wonderful legacy.
