To the Staunton and Murphy families, deepest condolences on the passing of Marguerite. She and Liam were neighbours of ours for a short time before they moved to Zambia. While I never had her as a teacher myself, I was inspired by what my sisters’ shared about her teaching of English and French, as well as her coaching with concerts and debating. I remember she making such an impression on one of her pupils that she put in a request for her in Radio Carousel based in the shopping centre in 1981. I used to meet Marguerite at family gatherings and she always showed a genuine interest in my educational journey after I left school. I remember the opening of the newly renamed Beaufort College, when a programme was produced featuring Marguerite’s voice-over for the guided tour of the college, complemented with Enya’s song, Sail Away. I’ll never forget the heartfelt speech she made for my father when he retired and I will always cherish the thoughtful words she shared about him after his passing – they meant so much to me. I was very sorry to hear of the sad passing of Marguerite. She was a mentor to me when I was a new arrival in DCC. She was a wonderful teacher who had a meaningful rapport with her students. I learned a lot from her. I remember her speaking about her own children with love and pride.
Although we lost touch over the years I wrote to her after Liam’s death and had a wonderful, newsy letter from her.
May she rest in peace now.
