Maria Gleeson

What to say about the lovely Maria? She was our ‘big cousin’ who we looked up to as children: a shining presence, full of warmth, kindness, intelligence and joy, who always seemed to have friends and admirers coming and going. I have such lovely memories of time spent with Maria - trips to galleries and museums, treats while babysitting us, help with school projects, time spent in Donegal and in later years chats in her lovely home where she always had some insightful words of wisdom to impart.

When I think of Maria I will remember: her mischievous laugh: her warmth and kindness; her sense of humour and fierce intelligence; her amazing sense of style; her strength; the beauty and goodness she seemed to see in everybody; her passion for her work which was such an inspiration; her creativity; and most importantly her love and adoration for her children, Sarah and Bec.

A lot of words, but none can express what a special human Maria was and what a loss she is to the world and to those who loved her, especially Sarah, Bec, Jack, Patricia, Eoghan, Maureen, Martin and her many many friends and extended family members. May she Rest in Peace.

Maria was the most amazing vivacious woman. When you left her company, you felt the better for it! She had a huge warm heart for everyone and such a positive outlook on life.

Maria will be forever treasured in our memories and so sadly missed.

Dear Jack and Patricia, Eoghan and Maureen, Martin, Bec and Sarah, and the entire Coyle and Gleeson families and friends, sending my deepest condolences for the untimely passing of Maria. I was lucky enough to have met her years ago several times while spending a summer in Ireland. I’m only sorry I didn’t connect with her in recent years. She carried a rare quiet grace, unique stength of compassion and thoughtfulness even at a young age. I looked up to her immediately as we were very close in age and were going through similar struggles at that age. Thinking of you all at this most difficult time and wishing Maria the most restful peace with the art angels. I can’t help but humbly think that Maria would love the spread of a little more art sprinkled with so much of Maria’s rare love, kindness and compassion to those around us xo

So sorry to hear of Marias passing. I remember her as a child with her cousin Hilda in Nenagh. She was such a gem with an infectious personality that one could not forget. Fly with the angels Maria.

I worked with Maria in Liberties College for over 30 years. It was a huge shock to learn of her passing. Her radiant presence will live on in the college and elsewhere and especially in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Just like to say i met lovely maria in hospital,sparked up a lovely friendship as maria was so open and giving lovely person inside and out,i hope i gave her few laughs while there,i was absolutely gutted to see that maria passed away so soon,my heart goes out to her family and friends who must be devastated with the loss of such a beautiful and talented lady .

Deepest sympathies to Sarah and Bec on the passing of their mother, and to the extended family. I worked with Maria in the Art Dept. for years. She was one of the first staff members I encountered when I had to show examples of my work before being approved to deliver a Sculpture workshop. I was nervous but Maria was welcoming and encouraging. I subsequently got more hours teaching in the Liberties & became a member of the art teaching team with Maria. She was ever welcoming and encouraging. She is sorely missed by students and staff alike.

Just devastated at the loss of my beautiful cousin Maria. She really was the epitome of beautiful inside and out. Always so glamorous, always smiling but also smart, funny and always so kind and complimentary (tax!)!

The eldest (not to mention favourite) of The Coyle grandchildren, I always looked up to her growing up!

She was so immensely proud of Sarah and Bec and so happy to have met Martin. They’re in all of our thoughts and prayers as are Jack, Patricia, Eoghan, Maureen, Matthew, Amy and Annabelle.

May you rest in peace now Maria, reunited with Auntie Josie and Granny.

I was so sad to learn of Maria’s passing. After growing up in Dunree Park but then moving away I didn’t see her often but bumped into her one night a few years ago while out and thought how lovely and warm and bubbly she was. To Jack, Patricia, Eoghan, Maureen, Sarah and Bec, I’m so sorry for your huge unbearable loss. Maria was a lady and I can still remember the first time I met her when she called to the house with her friend for my brother Derek. She became one of the family and all I have is fond memories of her, a unique and fun loving person. She was like a big sister to me.

She was very generous to me. When I had nowhere to live a few years back she took me in to live with her and the twins. A selfless, compassionate act. Fond memories of that time too.

Her family gave her a great send off today and you will all be in my thoughts and prayers.

So Sad to hear the passing of Maria. I have lovely memories from Primary school days with Maria playing in the class band.. Tin Whistle, Recorders, Triangles …such laughs we had. Our Secondary school days we fun too and Maria got to do her favourite subject ART and how amazing she was. I will always remember Maria’s Smile and her infectious laugh such a beautiful soul she always found the good in people.

This beautiful photo is exactly how Maria looks in my memory of our time in NCAD and a summer spent in London in the late 80’s. She was stunning and stylish and kind and funny, I’m glad that we had some lovely chats over the last few years via messenger, she was so proud of her girls.
