It saddens me that a deplorable illness deprived my aunt Marie from enjoying her retirement with Jim, her family; James, Mark and Dawn but especially her grandkids. That illness doesn’t and will never define her. She was devoted to her family and a “mammy” figure to many in Galway, Kildare & beyond including me. I have fond memories of my childhood summers in Sallins and weekends in Mylerstown during my college years. She was caring and nurturing and disliked injustice. She never hesitated to stand up for the underdog with a fiesty determination that you knew she always had your back. She was generous and kind. The many gifts at Christmas and birthdays, the curtains, bedspreads and dresses she made for family, the many outings she facilitated with us kids crammed into the back of her car….with shopping in Galway city, swimming in Leisureland, the beach at Salthill and especially loved her food at McSwiggins. She was proud of her Galway roots and took every opportunity to come back often where Jim continued to facilitate that in later years as her health declined. It’s tremendously sad the extended Balfe and Keating family have lost Marie in her prime years but we can look back fondly at a life well lived; of beautiful memories of happier times of the vivacious, spirited and audacious Marie Balfe. She was indeed “one of a kind”. May she rest in eternal peace 🕊️

It was with a very heavy heart Jim and family that we heard of your wonderful wife,mam and grandmother Marie's passing. Marie was a great neighbour for over 30 years, always there to lend a helping hand with her fantastic sewing skills. So many good chats & laughs over the hedge and in both our kitchens. Marie and Jim as neighbours enjoyed a good night out where the four of us danced the night away. Marie you will greatly missed by the Farrell family and all your neighbours.
