Deepest sympathy on the sad passing of Dierdre. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.
I’m very sad about Grandma’s passing but I’m also relieved that she passed away without feeling pain. Until our last conversation she was aware of herself and her surroundings and even celebrated her wedding anniversary last week. Although she missed Granddad she managed to look after herself for nearly 4 years with very little assistance. I could tell she appreciated Jeanne’s company these past few weeks and having my Dad doing everything he could to make her final years as comfortable as possible.
Grandma was full of wise advice and, like Granddad before he passed away, was always willing to help others in Bantry. People enjoyed talking with Grandma and spending time with her as she was known to be warm and generous in the community.
Each time I visited Ireland was a pleasure and even though it became more difficult after Granddad was gone, I was happy to spend time with Grandma. I am now looking at the time I spent in Ireland since I was a child with nostalgia but mostly with gratitude and pride for growing up with grandparents who were truly appreciated and always put others’ needs before their own.
I know that I will carry them with me as I often find myself thinking, “What would Granddad have told me to do?”, and soon I’ll ask the same about Grandma too. Even if that part of my life with them is over, they will have a heavy influence over everything I do next.
Until we meet again I wish them a peaceful, long rest.
