My sincere sympathies to you all upon the sad and untimely passing of your son, brother, uncle, nephew and cousin – Mark Hartnett.

It was a total shock to hear about his death as he was one of life’s kindest souls and such a brilliant mind. I can remember chatting with him on our shared passion, history.

Also, he conveyed a witty sense of humour and love of nature. Back in 2016, I was showing him a photo of my sister’s wedding out in Italy, due to my fairly huge height and having to wear tinted glasses for my photophobia – he said that I looked like his (my brother in law’s) bodyguard. Very quick witted.

Mark, have a peaceful eternal rest and it was a pleasure to meet and to know you.

My heart goes out to the Hartnett family at this time.

A lot of wonderful people here have commented on how witty and hilarious Mark was to be with. I would like to present another side to him, if I may. I have a vivid memory of him from my childhood. When I used to pal around with his brother Eoin, we'd spend a lot of time on the swings in the back garden. I remember the bond Mark had with a crow he took in as a pet and how he paid attention to every detail with its care. I would look over my shoulder as I swung back and watch as he tended to it in the hutch he kept it in. He was always intensely focused and oblivious to our presence. He'd carefully open the door and slowly entice it out. He would delicately coax it into his hands and pet it for several minutes. I was always reminded of the film 'Kes'. There was more to Mark than the tough guy punk with the Doc Martens he portrayed at the time.
