Mark McGovern

I was lucky enough to have met Mark on the P&O ship Oriana in 2012. He was always the life and soul of any gathering, at that time he solidified his status as everyone's favourite by having supplies of ice cream and ice cream cones, and a contraband toastie maker so he could make everyone cheese and bean toasties at the end of the night.

I consider myself very lucky amongst our friend group, because when I moved to Cork Mark and I visited each other several times a year. I decided against taking him to Blarney Castle because he needed no help with the gift of the gab!

Through the years he was a staunch friend and supporter; he would help you at the drop of a hat and never ask for anything in return.

I still struggle to believe that hes really gone. The amount of lives he touched, especially in recent years with his online presence, is a testament to what a good and kind man he was. It was a privilege to meet so many of you at the funeral and wake. As the only person from our group able to make it, you all made a heartbreaking day a little easier by welcoming me with open arms. Thank you.

Mark and i met in the fca. Although he crushed on my friend lols we remaind friends while in the fca.
When that relationship ended he asked me to be his date to his debs. True gentlemen and beautiful in his amy uniform and limo and flowers.

I moved away for years shortly after and we lost touch which seems to be life. Im not big on social media. I wish id have known Mark more and any pain you where in.

I got to know Mark through his time at Fitness 4 U. He was an absolute gentleman, you would always be greeted with a big smile and a ‘how are ya darlin ‘ He was so kind and generous with his time. His enthusiasm and love for training was infectious, he was certainly one of a kind.

Deepest sympathy on the passing of your lovely son. I taught Mark in his first year at GMIT (ATU). Such a sincere, warm person. His enthusiasm was infectious and he had a positive influence on everyone around him. Rest in peace young man.

The first time I met Mark he was buying weight plates off me. At this time I knew very little about the sport of strongman in Ireland. He noticed a metal log I had in my shed and asked "Do you do strongman?" To which I said no. I was very worried about hurting my back again.

Even though it had literally been healed with over a year at that point. And he said "Well, if you ever change your mind you know how to contact me". About a month later I reached out and started training for my first comp.

Mark was actually competing in the Novice class while I was in the first timers. He was a great support for any questions I had about the competition or the events and never let me down when I needed him.

The next 2 competitions I went to he was there live streaming the whole thing. He was such an integral part to the sport of strongman in Ireland for both natural and enhanced athletes.

He brought so many eyes to the sport on a National level and will be dearly missed by many. Wishing all the best to his close friends and family in this hard time ❤️

A very positive, polite, courteous and helpful young man. What a loss !
I knew him for last 13+ years. In fact one of the reason i went to visit the remote island of Koh Tao (southern Thailand) was Mark. He was based there during his scuba diving/ deep sea diving days in 2016-2017.
As expected, Mark was a very popular guy there in the diving school, staff & students all liked him very much. He loaned me his scooter/ moped without i even asking for it; for the entire duration of my stay on the island.

My thoughts and prayers are with McGovern family and friends of Mark at this time.
