My deepest sympathy to Geraldine and to her family, and to the extended Griffin families.
Some of my happiest teenage years were spent with Martin. That was before I went into “exile” in RTÉ. Sadly, contact was lost over the years regrettably. Living two hundred miles apart was a factor.
Back in the day, Cinema was big in Tralee with its three cinemas, all showing two screenings nightly of the main feature, it was called, the first and second house.
The Theatre Royal and Ashe Cinemas were our favourites. We always arrived towards the end of the first screening, seeing only the final twenty or so minutes. The end before the beginning!
When the lights came on, we would try and work out the likely plot. Then sit back and watch the repeat screening to the point in the film where we had arrived earlier. This was regular cinema viewing for us, the cart before the horse.
On leaving the Cinema we’d stroll up town. A favourite haunt of ours was standing in the recessed doorway of Lynn’s shop in Castle Street to “watch the talent" as it was called.
Then across the street to the nearby Brass Rail restaurant for chips and jukebox music. The Beatles, Elvis, and “A Whiter Shade Of Pale” comes to mind.
Another great pastime of ours was making 8mm films in nearby Foley’s Glen, and at Curraheen, and in other exotic locations. Cannot believe it was over sixty years ago. Happy Days.
