He was such a wonderful man, so caring and so committed not only to his own family but to the wider community. Our times with Lourdes Celtic were wonderful. On behalf of the FAI Football For All Programme, we wish to extend our sincere condolences to the Mates family on the passing of Martin. Martin was instrumental in the success of the overall FAI FFA programme. His passion and enthusiasm for the game was infectious. He will be missed by so many people, especially all of the players and coaches at Lourdes Celtic. May he rest in peace.

Martin was a mentor and taught me so much as a coach and a person through Lourdes Celtic Football For All. Standing alongside him on a sideline was a privilege and I will be forever grateful to him for allowing me to be part of his football family. It will never be the same without you.

He will be forever remembered as one of the kindest souls one could meet. He put everyone before himself and gave children a safe space to play a game they loved no matter their ability.
