Martin (Mattie) Scales

I heard from my uncle of Mr. Scale’s death. My condolences to all who mourn him.

I only met him once, over thirty years ago now, at a party at our cousin’s house in Headford (John & Imelda Tierney). I was only 14 and on a wonderful trip from Seattle to see your beautiful country. Of all the golden memories of what we did and saw, that party is my most treasured. The best part of all was hearing Mattie Scales (I’ve always loved that name) sing “The Town I Loved So Well”, which I hadn’t heard before that night. I think of him every time I hear it now. I picture him looking at the floor, holding his harmonica, and delivering that song in a way I have never heard equaled.

I’m sorry to hear of his death but can see he lived a full life and was very loved by those who knew him. We will pray for his soul and hope that even now he rests in peace.

Mattie Scales was a kind generous and decent man. He was always available to help with a school project or a fundraiser for Tanzania. May the Lord have mercy on his kind and gentle soul. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

Mattie's dedication to, and supreme efforts for his community are so similar to that of another great man (also small in stature) here in Co. Roscommon - the wonderful Fr.
Raymond Browne, PP., who died just before Christmas.
What a duo - if they were working on the same project!

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Mattie Scales. Mattie was a fantastic character and a great man for community spirit, as is so evident from all he achieved in his local community in Cloughanover and Headford.

He didn’t stop there though, he helped so many other communities fundraise for their local causes and Caherlistrane was no exception. Mattie was a huge support to our LGFA in running Fundraising Card Drives.

We all remember him fondly and have heavy hearts this evening to hear of his passing.
Rest in Peace Mattie, you will always be warmly remembered by Caherlistrane LGFA & GAA.

Mattie, to see the hearse turn left to carry you over the Rafee road for the last time was so lonely & sad. The tributes people paid by standing out on the road all the way from Headford to Cummer Cemetery was truly deserved. I can’t remember any event in Cloughanover that you weren’t part of. You have left a legacy anyone would find hard to match. You were one of a kind & will be mourned & missed by more people that you could have ever imagined. You were Our Lord Mayor of Cloughanover.
